I had to acknowledge to you the power of the story and your skill in telling it. I cried more than once. And some small part of my ignorance has been addressed. Yes your mum and dad won ! I also wanted to say to you how proud your forbears would be of your service to them and to us. Thank you

@dannythefink.bsky.social Dear Mr Finkelstein. You won’t recall me - we once had a mild Twitterspat on the subject of newspaper’s subscription business model and the resulting encouragement of echo chamber creation. Interesting, but … I have just put down your book Hitler, Stalin, Mum and Dad and

@podsaveamerica.crooked.com hi guys. Writing from the UK. Anyway, your “official acts” question : surely since POTUS oath is to protect the constitution which includes rule of law, isn’t any systematic undermining of law outside of official acts by definition ? QED

Such logic would support Johnson’s “last word” on the proroguing of Parliament. No. It is not the court’s job to second guess what parliament might say today. It is its job to reflect on what parliament has already said without fear or favour

howardbryant.bsky.social @howardbryant.bsky.social · 16/04/2025
Disagree. Parliament did decide. The court reflected its view of the relevant Parliamentary legislation. That is its role. If Parliament wishes to change its mind it is free to do so. At that point the court will amend its judgements accordingly (assuming the law is not ambiguously drafted)

@restispoliticsus.bsky.social re Trump immunity. Surely a prime responsibility of the President (and administration) is to uphold the constitution and therefore by extension the rule of law. Thus QED any act that challenges the principle of the rule of law cannot by definition be an “official act”?

@teamlabouruk.bsky.social don’t fuck about. A foreigner is threatening to rig our system through overwhelming wealth. I hear that you fear a backlash if you act. Sod it - you were given power so for fuck’s sake use it ! Change the law and block Musk and any similar of any political colour

BS doesn’t belong to The Left. Who wants to live in an echo chamber?
000
howardbryant.bsky.social @howardbryant.bsky.social · 23/11/2024
And not everyone here is of the left, neither should they be. BS needs a plurality of views where participants learn to disagree agreeably. Else things get worse for the world if we can’t get social media to lose its divisive toxicity. More facts, objectivity, humility. Less ‘whataboutery’ and bile.

Please don’t repost pictures of DM front page. Their circulation is low compared to history. What you are doing is publishing and disseminating their poison headlines on their behalf

Wow. Big of you. Accepted and appreciated. But we surely have to learn as a community to disagree agreeably or we are part of the problem. None of us are immune - including me

Wrong. The guy/girl asked if it was a joke. They did not specify title/tag or article. I read the piece and my comment clearly referenced the article. Try to keep up with the detail with less focus on revelling in being an aggressive self righteous utopian

howardbryant.bsky.social @howardbryant.bsky.social · 21/11/2024
Hmm. My “behaviour”, “misrepresenting”. The article was about world leaders’ view of Starmer being the one stable politician of the centre left. I said nothing about my beliefs, nor did I behave badly. The article expounds a view from 3rd parties - prob accurately. Glad you are nowhere near power.

@lewisgoodall.com why do I always hear, including you, that somehow, a democratic govt is expected to be immune from war crimes ? These things are not related. Think of a quadrant matrix with axis : authoritarian > democracy, international law respect > non respect

Where is the money to come from ? Take it from the NHS ? If you believe the story that the last govt’s management of fiscal policy (+Ukraine/Covid to be fair), you recognise that money is tight. This feels like pragmatic progress. A compromise yes - that’s politics for you. It’s not utopia

It seems to me the biggest mistake has been Biden (and some EU) tying themselves in knots over a clear definition/narrative of self defence (ie kicking out an invader). Because of this, these actions look and feel like escalation when in fact that could have been avoided early on

howardbryant.bsky.social @howardbryant.bsky.social · 20/11/2024

Lewis - people are talking past each other. I’m in favour of IHT (my kids less so..). But on this matter ? Problem is Govt mixing business and personal. A biz should be able to swap CEO without a tax chg. IHT on farms should be rolled over pending 3rd party disposal, cessation or excessive leackage

So you will be able to furnish me with : - Starmer enthusiastic comments on neoliberalism - ditto on further deregulation of finance - racist comments/policies - enthusiasm for settlers Meantime, rail is gradually coming under govt control.

howardbryant.bsky.social @howardbryant.bsky.social · 18/11/2024
We will have to agree to differ. The idea that Starmer is any kind of shadow right wing populist is, I would suggest, ridiculous

howardbryant.bsky.social @howardbryant.bsky.social · 18/11/2024

Position on child poverty slow progress and country wealth is v fair. I think having a go at the article heading is a bit thin. Whilst the general point is good it is generally accepted that the previous Labour admin made better progress than others

I wonder what Kuenssberg had to offer up in return for her last pay deal ? It’s utterly ridiculous to expect that kind of linkage. In my whole career it has never happened to me in the private sector and I’ve never asked such of any employees for whom I was responsible
