🏠Our latest Housing Outlook finds that the affordability gap between Local Housing Allowance and local rents set to reach record level next year🏠 Read now➡️https://buff.ly/iZ80qbA
Hannah Aldridge, Senior Research and Policy Analyst at the Resolution Foundation, said:

“The Local Housing Allowance is frozen at private rent levels from September 2023. Rapid rent rises since then have created an alarming affordability gap for almost two million low-income families. Without Government intervention in the Budget, this freeze in support will become a major drag on families’ living standards.

“The long-term freeze in rates is fiscally shortsighted, achieving short-term savings at the cost of a temporary accommodation crisis that is already costing local authorities £2.8 billion a year.

“With the gap between Local Housing Allowance rates and the 30th percentile of rent expected to pass the previous record of 17 per cent next year, and on track to reach 25 per cent by the end of the Parliament, the Government needs to re-link housing support to local rents before the gap does further damage to living standards.”

If private rents are not accessible to people on low incomes: - people become homeless and go to the council for help, instead of finding a new private rental - councils cannot rehouse into the PRS - social tenants rarely move out - causing the decline in relets seen in recent years.
