And then QFT for Housewife of the Year, doc using the competition as a lens for a generation of women living in the shadow of mother and baby homes, the marriage bar, 2 divorce referendums. Near full house with lots of laughter but also audible gasps of horror. Like STLT, it's such _recent_ history.

“I think I’m losing my nostalgia - and it feels good.” A powerful letter published in yesterday’s Sunday Independent. Many thanks to Anna Fitzgerald for writing it.

Just after watching Housewife of the Year- a definite must-watch, an extremely compelling look back into all aspects of Irish women’s lives in the 20th century, so glad that these women were giving the opportunity to share their stories ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

The reality for contestants in the ‘Housewife of the Year’ was a far cry from the aspirational tradwife trend on Instagram

“Housewife of the Year” is genuinely one of the best films about Ireland I’ve ever seen - it’s both hilarious and unsettling, generous and scathing. This country was an oppressive theocracy, where women were the primary victims. This doc shows us what that felt like in practice. Must watch ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

OUT NOW Between 1967 and 1995, Housewife of the Year, an annual competition for housewives, took place in Ireland. Our new documentary tells the story of not only the competition, but of a remarkable, resilient generation of women. Go see this uniquely Irish film in cinemas this weekend 💕

Ciaran Cassidy’s fine documentary is filled with much sadness but also allows a fair degree of celebration

Housewife of the Year is in cinemas from November 22. The winner of the 1969 competition, Ann McStay, was married at 20 and a mother of 13 by the time she was 31. Contraception was banned by the Catholic Church, and talking about it was taboo. www.irishexaminer.com/opinion/comm...
