I think you may have missed mine, but you ended up affirming it as well. To wit: this is just classical liberalism. Calling it "conservative" in the context in which we understand these terms today isn't convincing. Modern (and post-modern) conservatism is actively hostile to this very concept.

And this is why the founders erected a wall between church and state: Because they were traditional conservatives (aka classical liberals) and they didn't want churches to become the state. Thank you for reaffirming my point, even if you didn't understand it

(Western) religion is very much about using institutions to make us better people. The contrast with "government" vs. "ecclesiastical" is meaningless. If it's about the role of gov't in private life, start with that. But it's not about "sin being inevitable." That doesn't belong to conservatism.

The ability to become a better person is itself a component of human nature, though? I'm not following this argument. My understanding of the "human nature is fixed" argument of conservatism is primarily about the conscious maximizer (which became Greenspan's bane). And it's at odds with religion.
