Increased police-ICE connection fits neatly within the general stance many Americans have which, as I've said many times, boils down to "deport the bad ones and let the good ones stay." The problem is that those are not real categories and the Trump admin doesn't believe in any "good ones."

it I had to cite a key moment from Trump's speech, it would be this one. it is a threat not just to the Iranian government but to the Iranian people, and in that sense it contravenes both the international laws prohibiting war and the international humanitarian law that protects civilians

i guess Hannah-Jones(es) choice was between a better, whiter public and a worse, less-white public, not privates; that's an issue in DC too and the public charter system (which I think is pretty good here) worsens it by siphoning off families along the bad school/engaged parent frontier

Since we're all talking about schools, tomorrow the D.C. Council will vote on a ceremonial resolution recognizing 30 years of charter schools in D.C. Recall that charters came to be because of a partnership of congressional Republicans and D.C. advocates concerned about DCPS.

NEW: Resolving only some of the confusion surrounding the status of TPS for 170,000 Salvadorans who have been here living and working here legally since 2001, USCIS posts the following message. Needless to say, this reprieve of unknown length is wildly far from the orderly process mandated by law.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration
Services

Temporary Protected Status Designated
Country: El Salvador
• ALERT: An announcement on El Salvador's
TPS will be made at the appropriate time.
Until such announcement is made,
Salvadoran individuals present in the U.S. under TPS retain protection including work authorization.

NEW: ICE data released under the Freedom of Information Act reveals that more than half of all ICE arrests are now people with no criminal record; no prior convictions or pending charges. In the first week of August, 55% of all ICE arrests were of people with no criminal record.
Chart showing monthly ICE arrests by criminal record, January 2025 through July 2026. The chart shows total ICE arrests rising steadily from January 2025, then peaking and falling from January 2026 to February 2026, stabilizing, then rising again in June and July to record levels. Meanwhile, the composition of ICE arrests becomes more and more weighted towards people with no criminal record, and in July 2026, the majority are people with no criminal record.
