Oo, tricky. I did think the recent Japanese remake of The Cube was fun. Vivarium (2019) is underrated but a bummer at the end of the day so maybe not the right vibe. I don’t think I recommend Heretic here either, same reason. Level 16 (2018) could maybe fit the bill?

I was NICE compared to what I do in Charlottesville, which is tell 6ft tall white men at local concerts they are standing in front of a 5ft tall woman and they can stand behind me and see just as well. They don’t like that!

My forefoot is too wide for most cowboy boots so obviously I’m obsessed with cowboy boots. The sheer VARIETY available in American cowboy boots just explodes my mind.

Speaking of pod people, there are so many outfits to wear to a country show that aren’t a white minidress with pale tan cowboy boots and an unadorned pale jean jacket. SO MANY.

We bought the biggest bag they sold at the pick-your-own place, so aside from the handful of Cortlands I wanted, I fear we may in fact have been Macounmaxxing

I have been writing this post about the economics of open source, on and off, for 13 years. I wasn't expecting to end up at "Microsoft should send corporations a huge bill" but nothing else we've tried has worked. seldo.com/posts/nobody-pays-for-ope…

Nobody pays for open source. We can force them to. | Seldo.com
Thirty years of voluntary funding schemes haven't paid open source maintainers because asking doesn't scale. The real money already flows — to JFrog, Docker, Sonatype — at the registry layer. The fix: registries charge companies for supply (they already do), then route a slice automatically to the maintainers who make that supply worth having.

There are three types! The spritzer I got, a coconut margarita with amaro and some kind coconut syrup (not cream of coconut), and a spicy pineapple with Tajín rim.

If you asked me before tonight, I really thought that "While You Were Sleeping" was a rare quirky romantic comedy that I actually enjoyed as a surly middle schooler, and tonight I was like, ohhhh no I just liked her and can't remember a single other aspect of that movie, interesting

Saw Practical Magic 2 despite never seeing the first one - in the 90s I was a teenager and angsty so The Craft was more my style - but hey, Lee Pace and an Alamo special menu reposado margarita spritzer, what could go wrong? Haha whooops I'm shook realizing I LIKE-liked Sandra Bullock in the 90s

I’m living my best life re: fashion coming back cyclically - wide leg jeans are back, dark brown is back around, I’m seeing some gauchos so I can maybe replace the brown ones I’ve been wearing under longer skirts for a decade

(I don’t have the skills necessary to take a photograph of holographic stickers that shows the lettering *and* looks photogenic overall, so you’ll have to trust me it looks real sick IRL)

As I was going through some stickers tonight that are not ready to be stuck on something just yet, INSPIRATION - what if I put them in the weird photo frame?! And I am feeling like an absolute genius right now with my weird unused sticker collection collage.
My swirly rolled newspaper frame, now holding a hard-to-photograph holographic “Abortion Access Is the Future” astronaut sticker from our local abortion fund, a holographic sticker from my go-to local brewery, a sticker I bought from the merch table at a concert featuring the fantastic Rebecca Porter, and a smol sticker of Katie Aki’s Listening Lady holding a lantern.

So I’ve kept thinking about putting it on the Goodwill pile, but it’s never made the cut, because it matches my desk mat, it’s fun, I just need to figure out what to do with it, or so I kept telling myself

Christine Bryant-Ryback @hootbot.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
Around the same time I bought a matching picture frame and I can’t remember why. Was it a gift? Was it meant to decorate my office also? The thing is, it’s meant to hold an actual physical photo and like, who has those? (I mean, I do have some, but I wasn’t planning for one of those here.)
A small photo frame made of colorful rolled newspaper circles, with a strand of rolled paper beads attached to hang the frame somewhere

Sometime around maybe 201(4? 5?) I was at Ten Thousand Villages and they had this thing labeled as a “charger” that was inexpensive, colorful yet subtle, basically everything I was looking for at the time to lift up my laptop stand just a tiiiny bit more and spiff up my office desk. I still have it!
A round mat made of circles of colorful rolled newspaper, with a big circle in the middle and many small circles surrounding, underneath the stand of an orange 2021 iMac. In the background there’s a pale brown and purple desk mat with moths.

Also weird: answering re: “aunt”. I have no aunts but when I was growing up I had two great aunts, one on my mom’s side in Wisconsin and one on my dad’s in North Carolina. Both were referred with different pronunciations? So I decided ultimately my answer was other, i.e. “whatever you’d like, ma’am”

Christine Bryant-Ryback @hootbot.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
Yeppp, though on my first attempt it thought I was from Maine. I thought about about all my answers and realized I probably call them “sneakers” because everyone else does now but growing up I was more likely to say “tennis shoes” and that change was enough to get me back where I was born & raised.
Screenshot of my mydialect.us results - I talk like someone from Virginia, and my results match a typical resident 48% but the most-like-me parts of Virginia are the the central and southeastern bits and downwards into NC (where my dad has family so that tracks), then less like me north of me in Virginia or west of me. Somehow besides Virginia and NC, people talk most like me in Maine and New Mexico???

The height adjustment on this chair is just spinning it forever. But it IS in fact the right height for me at its shortest

Christine Bryant-Ryback @hootbot.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
Then about a year ago, I flipped it over to see if I could replace the crotchety dented chair wheels with softer new ones [nope, these wheels are soldered in place] - and lo and behold, it turns out my beloved old chair is a 1988 vintage Steelcase
Slightly blurry photo beneath my chair because it’s heavy and I didn’t feel like flipping it, showing a Steelcase label, a Year of 88, and other random facts I’d happily type up on request for chair nerds, let me know

Maybe 20 years ago now (yikes), my tiny local tech company said “you can just take it” re: the beat-up orange-and-brown armless office chair I loved, and that’s been my computer chair ever since.
A kinda stained rust/terracotta desk chair made of some kind of cloth and brown plastic on the back, with a silver 5-wheeled base

I keep shopping for fancier desk chairs that actually work for someone my height (5'1") and the best option still sounds like a Steelcase Leap v2 - the thing is…

I love @emily.gorcen.ski a lot but my love language is definitely NOT putting a VERY nice lock on the side of a Pittsburgh bridge to symbolize our bond. Like, that is a $20-40 heavy-duty lock, I know because I bought one for our storage unit - what is wrong with this couple, are they okay???
