How important are local government housing policies? They’re crucial. Saanich and Oak Bay exist in the same economy as Victoria and Esquimalt. There’s no shortage of housing need. The only reason they built so much less housing is because local policies prevented it

For decades, Victoria didn't build enough rental housing to meet demand. However in recent years they really stepped up, and the thousands of new homes are allowing people to live in the city rather than being forced out into the suburbs. Let's keep it up!

One way our members take housing action is by writing pro housing letters to the editor, like these published in Vic News today. If we want better housing outcomes, pro housing voices need to be just as visible, persistent, and loud as those opposed. Read, share & consider writing your own.

Oak Bay has voted down yet another housing proposal 😞 As the applicant put it, “Uplands is not a museum… it is an early 20th century idea conceived in a cooler, much less crowded world.” It’s time for choices that reflect today’s reality, not 1920’s nostalgia.

Different decade, same problem. Back then, the “boogeyman” for local residents was townhouses; today, it’s towers. I wonder how many of the people opposing the Quadra–McKenzie plan now are living in homes that were fiercely opposed in 1977.

Why! So disappointed in Colwood for denying 66 homes. Colwood Corners is designated for high-density development according to the 2018 Official Community Plan. What is the point of a community plan if everyone ignores it? #yyjpoli #yyjpolitics #colwood #hfl #homesforliving #housingcrisis

After another long night of Victoria’s OCP hearings, deliberations will resume Oct 2. James Bay was well represented; with many speakers warning the neighbourhood is already too dense. Con’t

We're pleased that after last night's vote, the draft Quadra-McKenzie Plan will now move forward to round 4 of public consultation. However, we're concerned about the hostile reception many supporters of the plan, particularly young people, received from other members in the audience. Statement:

Saanich Council moves forward with Quadra-McKenzie Plan
Saanich - July 8th, 2025

Last night, Saanich council voted to receive a staff report containing an updated draft of the Quadra-McKenzie Plan, which will now proceed to a fourth round of public engagement.

"Building townhomes and apartments in existing single family neighborhoods is critical for solving the housing shortage. That's why we support the QMP, which would legalize thousands of new homes near transit, schools, and other amenities" said Jack Sandor, president of Homes for Living. "Furthermore, we condemn the hostile treatment many young people received from people opposed to the plan in the audience. Booing, jeering, and profane insults are unacceptable and only serve to make speaking before council more daunting."

In addition to booing and shouting that had to be shut down by the Mayor, at least four different young people in the audience reported harassment from other audience members, including homophobic and other graphic insults. "We are grateful to Mayor Murdock for doing what he can to ensure Saanich council is a place everyone feels comfortable to share their views."

Finally, we'll note that the more progressive option is often simpler + easier to administer. The proposed parking bylaw is complex, with reductions based on proximity to downtown, urban nodes, transit, unit size, and affordability. Or you you could just end ALL parking mandates. 4/X

Moreover, the proposed TDM and cash-in-lieu options are half-measures. We don't want developers to overbuild free parking; why penalize providing less parking? A better approach would be to only have parking maximums, and allow builders to reduce development fees by providing TDM measures. 3/x

Parking mandates are bad, period, no matter where you live. They make it cheap to drive and pass on the costs (via higher rents and pollution) to people who walk/bike/transit. The list of cities that have abolished is long and getting longer every year! 2/x parkingreform.org/resources/ma...

FYI, parking reform is up on this week's COTW agenda in Victoria. Staff are proposing reducing parking minimums + a host of TDM measures that will enable builders to further reduce the amount of parking they need to build. This is a positive step, but COV should just abolish parking minimums 1/x

🏘️ Issue: Municipalities are failing to meet housing targets. Where are the carrots and sticks? Only 3 municipalities are hitting their goals—most are falling behind. Yet there are no serious consequences. It's time for BC to reward action and penalize delay.

Staff's recommendation right now is to i) slightly scale down the housing ii) postpone the bus lanes iii) spend housing accelerator money on even more consultation
