Control Resonant director Mikael Kasurinen says waaaaay more! The player has to also participate and not be 'an outsider just looking at stuff' Level designers are 'fucking' so important to bring the myriad clues for 'the player to feel like they figured it out' www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4jD...
Kasurinen (Remedy): So this is what I believe to be true and and and then you can obviously have a debate about it. I'm not going to argue that I'm right, but this is what I believe to be true. So you have basically three different things you care about when you think about the game.
There's the competence factor, right? Like the skill curve, like how good will I be at playing the game? Do I trigger the right action at the right time and so on? And and then there's a second thing which is called autonomy, which is basically a sense of volition. Me having a sense of choice in the game. It's not like the game is telling me what to do and I just do it. I feel like I'm the one making decisions in the game.
And and the third one maybe less relevant for this but still important is uh a sense of relatedness, right? Like so your not alone in the world. I mean you can have a game where you are alone in the world but then that's the whole game, it's all about that. But if the player feels like there's a sense of a relationship to other characters or in a multiplayer game it can be to other people as well and there's a co-op thing and so on.
And if you find the right balance between competence, autonomy, and and relatedness, you're going to have a good game, right? And and when you think of autonomy that's the key here right when you think about like the the what what was it called the fart trail. Sorry, I mean I love Wolverine and so on-
<<Beard laughter>>

Kasurinen (Remedy): So I-I'm trying to navigate this carefully because I don't want to start a feud or anything like that. It's I, it's so important that the players feel like they're the ones figuring it out. It's the job of us, as as creators to have, I mean it is a crafted experience at the end of the day, right? You have to find the right balance between... Here's the world and and here are the different themes and elements you have to pay attention to. But it has to feel like it's on you to make a decision on what to do with those elements that you see within the world. If it feels like it's like go here, it's not anymore decision for the player, somebody already decided for you. So, so that's the key difference that I think is is so crucial that people need to feel because there's nothing fucking better than it feels like “I found my way to do it”, and and our job as designers, as as creatives, is to just create this world and leave it to the players to just pay attention.
And I'm not like, you know and it's a different thing like it's a it's a difficult thing with Control because I know what we're doing but like bu but from in my defense but because I think we're putting a hard thing in front of the players, some of the players at least, because It can feel impenetrable, it can feel like “I don't know what to do”. And <<sharp exhale lean forward>> to me that comes with... I'm biased of course, but but it's it's a genuine like... um like desire for the players to participate in the in the experience. Meaning that they have they they can't be outsiders just kind of uh look at stuff, they have to be there making like participating in the work of figuring out what to do. We're not going to tell them necessarily directly, and and that's a difficult thing because it can alienate a lot of people really quickly with that.
So yes it is a bit of a risky thing, but I ultimately believe that that's the that's the right way to go about this and that's the that's the righ…Kasurinen (Remedy): You have to have a visual design for the whole game, right? Every single choice that you have like where do I put a light? Where do I put the certain color? It these things matter. This thing matters so much. Lighting, like by the way fucking like lightning team Control Resonant like so good. Like the lightning of that whole game I'm sure you haven't played it yet all of you, But, so good.
And when I say good lighting, I don't just mean that it's pretty to look at. It's functional. It tells you a story, it tells you what are the right things for you to pay attention to and what are the things you don't have to worry about. It's so good. So a lot of these little things they actually kind of come together in a game that is like thought through in a kind of foundational sense.
Like, and what I say that, I mean like, you know, finding the right way, it's not the mechanic... it's it's all these like little bits and pieces like, you know, the textures of the world or the story of the lore or like yes like the lighting and the color of the lighting and yes the classic is the top that goes over the ledge and so on. Yes we use that as well. Like just a little clue, pay attention to this. And and if you do it right, and it's also a lot of the time about what not to do because then you don't want to have those you know tops and and so on like all over the place. You want them to be where they matter.
So a lot of it is a conscious choice, really, at the end of the day. And if you did a good job people will feel like “Yeah I found the place where I wanted to be”. And and Resonant is a bit complicated game because and again we never done anything like this to this degree, but there's a lot of different things to do.
So how do you we don't want to necessarily say “go and do this now this is important”, it's more like “here's the world, here are the options, pay attention to it, do what you want”
And again you have to participate, a bit of this is you as well…

An Abyssinian roller that is also a little book. It begins: “Why is a roller like a writing desk? The need for fire and acacia, both. One for blood - the other, ink.” Written in India ink. - #SciArtSeptember Day 30: Carbon
A painted, cut-out paper bird in the shape of an Abyssinian roller. The bird has one wing folded back, which reveals a small booklet of pages under the wing. The underwing is brown and has uneven letters painted on it in another shade of brown reading, “Some small words about the medium of carbon.” The booklet pages are bright blue, like the bird, and the words inside are unclear. it's important to give the heroes a home. it's also important to give that home a character sheet, so that the players can build it up, make it cute, make it their own. and so that you can attack it. make them fret over it. make them roll dice about it.
Screenshot of a sheet in-progress for a fantasy adventure game called Aryse, showing the Nexus, the home of the characters in the game. The Nexus is an indistinct silhouette of an otherworldly tower surrounded by smaller outbuildings; sections of the structure are labeled, as the Apex, the Tower, the Memorium, the Gatehall, the Satellites, and the Undercroft.
