If the supposition is- I oppose all American offensive wars and military operations, then I’m on board. But the US not arming smaller nations/not maintaining deterrence would lead to far, far greater death and suffering.

That to me is a pretty difficult position to defend in the abstract. It basically just amounts to a total end to deterrence. In this scenario there are about a dozen European and Asian countries that cease to exist within a year or two.

Confiscating the passport of the elected representative of the opposition territory in a raid with a flimsy pretext to attempt to strip them of citizenship is something we have words for when it happens in other countries

The Silence of the Lambs also has most of its truly frightening stuff at the end of the movie.

That movie is also veeery slow for the first hour. House maybe? It’s so corny but then does get pretty scary.

I fundamentally disagree about NATO (especially as a German citizen) but this is a totally reasonable view. That said it is not uncommon for countries under siege to pause elections and the counter factual has gone quite badly often. Britain in 1945 is one such example.

Tangential but I’ve come to view electoral politics as defense and mutual aid as offense.

Must say I have taken the unconventional path of actively rooting for economic collapse, while also in my personal life taking on way more mutual aid and volunteering. If my thoughts are impure at least my actions are good.

Victims of the Trump admin’s persecution don’t deserve it. But the American people absolutely deserve $10 diesel.

hoipolloiboytoy.bsky.social @hoipolloiboytoy.bsky.social · 15/10/2026
It absolutely is. When Trump won a second time I said, ‘I will weep for immigrants, people in the LGTBQ+ community, minorities, but the economy I refuse to weep for, in fact the American people deserve unfettered Trump economics.’ Nothing that has happened since has shaken me out of that.

That was absolutely galling. Obviously the standard is in the basement with Schumer but even so that was shocking.

hoipolloiboytoy.bsky.social @hoipolloiboytoy.bsky.social · 15/10/2026
It absolutely is not more complicated. Those countries entered alliances with the United States of their own volition. There’s no coercion to force them to take American military bases. They all asked for a NATO military presence. Why is the will of these people completely unimportant to you?

hoipolloiboytoy.bsky.social @hoipolloiboytoy.bsky.social · 15/10/2026
The thing I think you are absolutely correct about is that the people of Ukraine and also Russia are victims here. But I would argue they are victims of Russian oppression and aggression. The US and NATO ending any support of Ukraine doesn’t improve anyone’s station.

hoipolloiboytoy.bsky.social @hoipolloiboytoy.bsky.social · 15/10/2026
It seems like your problem with NATO’s and the US involvement in Ukraine is that it is artificially prolonging this war that would have ended without their support. But it would have ended with Ukraine’s annihilation. I’m not sure the Darwinian implications of that are any better.

hoipolloiboytoy.bsky.social @hoipolloiboytoy.bsky.social · 15/10/2026
I mean it definitely is in the way that it is trying to keep Russia out of Europe. The fact that you disagree with a lot of what NATO has done doesn’t negate that. I’d agree NATO has no business in places like Libya, though Afghanistan was definitely supported by Article 5.

Their owners get mergers and deregulation and steal from our tax dollars with government subsidies and tax cuts. The people in the press get a modest bonus for their essential part.

hoipolloiboytoy.bsky.social @hoipolloiboytoy.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
Equally load bearing is the press insisting at every possible juncture that it is not their job to discern truth from fiction or even report accurately on what Trump actually says or does. It’s all one big grift to make him sound sane so they can get their bonuses.

I guess if you’re dealing with like nuclear physics less than 1% is a high number, but in basically every other field that is a tiny outlier, especially in politics.

It literally is a few. If you add up all the Democratic candidates in the United States up for election at the federal and state level the number who have said something that could be interpreted as anti trans is easily less than 1%
