If a company decides to raise its prices to offset a tariff, then they are no longer paying the tax, but YOU are. Tariffs are an indirect way of taxing you more.

Specific, targeted tariffs can work if the affected industry has backing and investment from public funds to help offset passing the price increases on to consumers. See - Biden Chips act. General, blanket tariffs without government backing are a catastrophe in the making - see Smoot Hawley.
