The very name begs to be the final element of a modern analog to FDR's derisive campaign chant "Martin, Barton, and FISH," which went the equivalent of viral in its day. How about "Altman, ____ ?, and MUSK" Need help with the rhythm of the 2nd name in the sequence.

Yes. Here's why they will eventually come around to your view: if a Rep. or Senator can't even deliver a passed and signed appropriation, why would a special interest ever steer a campaign contribution to them?

To call him a bureaucrat understates his importance and status. He sits with the Cabinet. He's a Senate-confirmed appointee, who is therefore subject to impeachment. He can be held accountable through normal political processes as you suggest.

I'm not opposed to nuclear in the mix, but no reactor of TMI's vintage should be reopened or extended. Everything must be Gen III/III+ with passive safety features, at the very least. My guess is Japan will follow that path, now that they really need the power they took offline after Fukushima.

If you don't know whether a company is publicly traded, you have no business shorting it. Short selling is a dangerous game in which it's hard to establish a sensible position even if you have pro-level knowledge and easy to lose a lot of money quickly, especially if you don't. Don't do it.

It’s not being used as a title else it would be before the name and capitalized. This is, was, or should be the style at all major U.S. newspapers. If it functions as a new first name it’s a title and should be upper-cased and then you might have a point on localized spelling.

It’s a state law, not a city law. Just enforced by the city.

The Forbes graph has gotten play but it's important to be clear a lot of his total was gifts to private foundations -- especially to the then-B&M Gates Foundation, which he trusted to be his steward. If those donations just got added to endowment, they're not really direct gifts to public charities.

Pretty sure Cuomo used to give his SoS as a PowerPoint delivered in the Albany Egg, not the legislative chambers. Then he took the PowerPoint around the state to other media markets.

Many U.S. states had exactly this one county gets one seat design for their upper chamber until the Supreme Court's one-man-one-vote decision, which said if you weren't this way in the US Constitution (like the Senate) you couldn't do it. Even NYC had this in its Board of Estimate, now gone

It’s a commercial disguised as a safety instruction, and a good commercial at that. Apparently they actually paid an ad agency to do something with wit. Hard to hold that against them. Just ignore it after the first time. They’ll replace it eventually.

NYC has a long history of municipally constructed and owned markets (the vendors themselves were private businesses). See mailchi.mp/urbanarchive... My family shopped in one of these in the early '60s because its produce was superior to that available in our (cooperatively owned) supermarket

I thought I was having a stroke when I read this passage in the paper version of the NYT this morning -- thank you for calling them out on exactly the correct grounds and with the right measure of scorn!

It's not uncommon for general aviation airports to be untowered, at least during certain hours, but probably rare for them to be demoted from towered to untowered.
