Being bleary-eyed after a push like that shows how much you care about Monstrous Bloodlines. The wait for the proof copy is the hardest part! When it arrives, read it like a reader would, with a pen in hand. Print shows up things you never spot on screen.

Getting close to publishing again is exciting, and those marketing experts turning up in your followers are so annoying! A simple rule is to ignore anyone who messages you first. The best help is usually something you go looking for yourself.

Feeling a bit strange without your edits to do is so relatable. Good luck with whatever you're cooking, fingers crossed! When you come back to book one, read it fresh before you change anything. A bit of distance makes the weak spots much easier to see.

That keyboard smash is completely justified. Congratulations on finishing The Mixx Saga! For your beta readers, tell them what you most want to know, like pacing or where they got lost. They'll give you much more useful notes.

Editing what you hope is the final draft is such a satisfying stage, and late November will be here before you know it! For a last pass, read it aloud or in a different format. It catches things your eyes have learned to skip.

Write, eat, sleep and hug doggies honestly sounds like a pretty good plan on a tough day. Congratulations on the cover for your gas lamp fantasy, too! If the re-edit feels slow, try one tiny target, like a single chapter a week. It keeps you moving without the pressure.

A release schedule that no longer matches your word count is a really stressful place to be. It's okay to rethink it! Try planning around finished, edited chapters rather than raw word count. Editing time is the easiest part to forget, and it's what makes a release date realistic.

Finishing book four in a series is a big milestone, and something lighter after all that tension in Wildfire sounds like exactly what you need! When the draft is done, leave it alone for a couple of weeks before you start editing. You'll come back with much fresher eyes.

Counting down the hours until you're free to write is a feeling every author knows, and an interlude before the first vulnerable moment sounds like a great build-up! If you're revising from beta feedback, sort the notes into big story points and small tweaks. It feels much less overwhelming.

Great question, and the honest answer changes from book to book. The most useful feedback is usually where a reader got confused or bored, because you can't spot that yourself. Ask every beta reader the same three questions, so the answers are easy to compare.

Planning to publish? Work backwards from your launch date and leave room for every stage of editing. Big structural edits, copy edits and a final proofread usually happen one after another, with time in between for you to make changes. Allow for weeks, not days.

A November cover reveal sounds lovely, plumbers allowing! While your designer works on the back cover, it's worth settling the final blurb and page count. The back cover and the spine both depend on them, so it saves a redo later.

A gnome who's secretly human is such a fun idea, and a great way to stay busy while the betas have your horror books! Try not to peek at the horror manuscripts until all the notes are back. You'll read the feedback with much fresher eyes.

Chapter 33 edited, two queries out and new words on the novella, all while knackered after work. That's a proper win! If you don't already, keep a simple query tracker with dates and replies. It makes the waiting feel a lot less stressful.

125k words on This Rotten World 13, and 500k across four manuscripts in four months, is seriously impressive! For revising hell, try one pass per problem, like plot first, then pacing, then line edits. It stops 500k words feeling like one giant job.

Every story for the year drafted is huge. Enjoy that strange free time feeling! With Sisterhood 5 ready to go, one last flick through the print previewer before you publish is worth the ten minutes. It catches the little layout slips that are easy to miss.

Only the copyeditor left to go. That's such an exciting place to be, and peak is the best way to feel about your own book! While you wait, it's a good moment to sort your ISBN and write your blurb, so you're ready to publish as soon as the edits come back.

That cringe while fixing the formatting is so real, and choosing a book you're fully behind over a rushed release is a brave call. Before the reboot, jot down exactly what made you wince. It gives the rewrite a clear focus, so you know what better looks like.

Hunting the cover for a monkey before rereading the message is such a relatable proof moment. More coffee is the right call! A quick logo check is to look at the cover really small and in greyscale. If it still stands out, it'll pop online too.

A full cover refresh for the whole series is so exciting, and The Atlantis Twins sounds wonderfully eerie! When you swap the new covers in on KDP, order a fresh proof of each one. New artwork can sit a little differently around the spine, so it's worth seeing in print.

hmdpublishing @hmdpublishing.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Before you hit Publish on KDP, open your print file in the Previewer and go through every page, not just the first few. It flags text outside the margins, images with too low a resolution and pages that don't match your trim size. Fix each one in your file, then upload it fresh.

Ordering the proof is such an exciting moment. It's when the book starts to feel properly real! When it arrives, check the spine text is centred and the inside margins aren't too tight. Both are much easier to spot in print than on screen.

Copy edits done and the manuscript with your editor. That's a big step, and beating 1 December would be a lovely bonus! Ask her for a rough start date if you can, then plan the novella around it. Good luck keeping it novella length!

A failed proof and a paperback you can't pull is a rough start to the week. If it's already live, there's an Unpublish option in the three-dot menu next to the paperback on your KDP Bookshelf. If it's still in review, that option only appears once it goes live.

Blurry pictures in a proof are so disappointing after all that work. It's usually the image resolution. Aim for 300 DPI at the size they print, and if you're working in Word, switch off image compression before saving (File, Options, Advanced). Then upload a fresh file.

Comparing quotes for your book? Check what each one includes before you look at the price. How many rounds of changes? Print and ebook files, or just one? Are the spine and back cover part of the cover price? Two quotes for the same amount can be very different jobs.
