Before you hit Publish on KDP, open your print file in the Previewer and go through every page, not just the first few. It flags text outside the margins, images with too low a resolution and pages that don't match your trim size. Fix each one in your file, then upload it fresh.

Comparing quotes for your book? Check what each one includes before you look at the price. How many rounds of changes? Print and ebook files, or just one? Are the spine and back cover part of the cover price? Two quotes for the same amount can be very different jobs.

Hiring an editor? Send a short note with your manuscript. Include your genre, word count and who the book is for, plus the two or three things you're most worried about, like pacing or a saggy middle. A good editor will look closely at those, and the feedback will be far more useful.

When a sample edit comes back, don't just skim the red ink. Check three things: 1. Do the changes still sound like you? 2. Are the queries clear questions, not vague notes? 3. Would you want the rest of the book treated the same way? If those three land, you've probably found your editor.

Before you send your book to an editor, spend one afternoon on this: 1. Read one chapter aloud. Clunky lines jump out. 2. Search your crutch words (just, really, suddenly). 3. Check every character's name is spelt the same throughout. Your editor can then spend their time on the good stuff.

Your paperback looked fine on screen. Then the proof arrives and the words are sinking into the spine. That's the gutter. KDP's minimum inside margin grows with page count: 0.375in up to 150 pages, 0.5in to 300, 0.625in to 500. Minimums, not targets. Add a little more.

You already broke your own canon and don't know it. A dead character, alive in book two. A journey that changed length for no reason. Not typos, canon failures. Most self-published authors never finish a series because continuity breaks reader trust. The fix: a living series bible. DM "BIBLE".
