Excited to report on some work I did with @sims-mss.bsky.social & some tough-to-read but very rewarding historical sources. Come hear me talk about transcription tools now at our disposal, & what is required to use them (hint: it's not computer fairy dust...) www.library.upenn.edu/events/schoe...

One day historians will track R4’s dismal enpodcastification and relinquishing of ambition as proxies for the twenties’ polite turning from the loutishness of learning. Contrast the apparent 365 availability of budget for this month’s sinks-like-a-stone ephemeron for the laugh-free 1830 comedy slot

Elegiac and lovely and an altogether fascinating insight into one of the two or three books to which i never tire of returning. Such sadness that intellectual archaeology like this will never be possible for current and future scholarship.

So incredibly cool & useful. Ive never seen anybody do this & it is a genius idea. Another thing which you might find it interesting to test: like it or not, some proportion of the readers of your readme will be LLMs. Might be interesting to check an LLM can follow the install instructions as well?

❤️ Frost’s 1874 ‘The Old Showmen and the Old London Fairs’: every bit as garrulous, enthralling & gleefully unreliable as any of its subjects. Never one to let the truth get in the way of a good story. One day I will call a book ‘The Making of the English Amusing Class’ archive.org/details/olds...

Bit the bullet & bought this. Very does not disappoint Unexpectedly, also one of the most invigorating sourcebooks of historical technique I’ve ever come across - almost every page describes some novel manoeuvre with a primary source just begging to be stol… used transferably Thoroughly inspiring.

Amen. The Japanese thing where you mash them into custard filled skins with sugar, cream and butter is phenomenal with the nondairy substitutes so i imagine (suspiciously vividly, suspiciously often and at suspicious length) that with the real thing it may approach a religious experience.

Fruit? An abomination. A fraud. Very best to be said is a stop-gap technology mercifully obsolete since the industrialisation of sugar Veg? Only if they grow below the ground and/or have been pickled to mask the taste Also: Im vegan. Ive made pretty much the full set of joy-limiting life choices.

Solidly with you for every joyless forkful of this. Only once did nature explore the possibility of making fibre not synonymous with the texture of despair but apparently it ran out of inspiration after the raspberry* (*And even those aren’t a patch on deliciously fibreless blue raspberry sweets)

Which is sensational… but: demand is unchanged & most of the horn on the market is South African. While ZA also saw a fall in wild poaching, this is likely because it has leaky stockpiles in private ownership and wants to legalise the trade, so “law enforcement” is happy to allow them top up supply

Successful first day in Prague. Ended with an evening stroll, passing the Museum of Alchemy just as they were setting up a puppet theatre production of Faust in the courtyard! It was pretty great! Very much informed by Švankmajer (they did the "Padlookay! Pilookay!" routine, I grinned like heck)...

You should 💯invite him and Atticus to do a soundtrack for the book. I for one wouldnt want my coroners served with anything else and i guarantee i will very very have The Fragile on as i read it even if his hollywood commitments do keep him busy this time.

Speaking as a fanboy, familiar with your bsky game: very easy to believe. Dont be too hasty ruling out the dry ice though. Congrats on slaying tonight. Trent would be proud. And would probably be very there for the stories come to think!

I was once given the advice that in the event of a performance going badly, the best thing to do is to gesture enthusiastically at the doors behind the audience and announce ‘Ladies and gentlemen… MR ELTON JOHN!”, and then escape in the confusion.

❤️ The very sign I’ve been pleading with people not to make me tap for years! There is an intricate, altogether neglected history of performance there for the having that is way cooler than anyone has ever cared to discover. Wooden ‘O’? Yes, but who made the casques and how was the cramming done?

Would that i could honestly disavow it so easily! I gather from medical TV shows that identifying the current year / day of the week are frequently used to triage for eg concussion, stroke etc and live in some anxiety that i could seek treatment for eg a sore throat & end up admitted & in an MRI…

You wrote that? No way! I sing that all the time. But when i do it i have my own personal touch: my chorus goes full Bohemian Rhapsody as the massed choir sing ‘you’re sodding it UP! You fool! You fool! ID-IOTTTTTT. Duh!”
