July 30, 1869, the world’s first oil tanker named "Charles" departs from the US headed for Europe with a bulk capacity of 7000 barrels. Due to design flaws it was quickly replaced, like by the "Zoroaster" in 1878 🚢🛢️

The 15th-century Holstentor in Lübeck tilts because it was built on marshy compressible ground. It got so bad that the city almost demolished it in the mid-1800s, but its citizens voted to restore it instead. #geotechnical en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holsten...

June 30, 2009, died #OTD self-taught paleontologist Joan Pederson Wiffen. She discovered the first #dinosaur fossils in New Zealand. Most even doubted that this would be possible, as most reconstructions at the time assumed that New Zealand didn't form a landmass until after the Mesozoic 🇳🇿🦖
