Ever seen a pregnant tomato about to give birth to seedlings? No, me neither, but this is what it looks like. The question now is whether to plant it and give the babies a fighting chance or not.

I live in a socialist democracy with a health care system that still functions. I needed a small operation at the hospital that cost me nothing. The hospital was modern, bright, clean, calm, and close to public transport. Staff was friendly, cheerful and not suffering overwhelm. The food was good.

Dutch dentists have told me on two separate occasions that it was customary in some remote farming communities for a bride to have all her teeth pulled before the wedding, and that this was considered part of the dowry. Apparently, it still happens, although rarely. I need to know more.

This pic is not the best, but it’s the Southern Darter in it that makes it ‘hot’. This dragonfly is quite rare in the Netherlands, although its numbers are increasing. However, you rarely see it in the middle of the city. The gardens we tend there offer nature a chance to show how resilient it is. 💚

I stopped during a walk in the forest last year and said to the present company: why, it’s so quiet, where are the birds? — oh, they are sleeping right now, a woman replied. I looked rather incredulous. How could she forget what it sounded like? This is how the baseline shifts.

“We mostly think of nature as biodiversity, a concept, but this made it so personal, so emotional and so horrific,” she said. “It was hard to feel how we’ve made the world a really hostile place for all these individual creatures. When that’s you, you really feel it. It was quite galvanising.”
