beat Psycutlery! what a game! consistently fun and creative level design across the board. its particular brand of silliness really ended up winning me over by the end. it's an impressive effort even without mentioning the fact that it's freeware! go play it!

I think these guys might be the most “I thought you were a collectible” enemies I’ve seen in any game. every time I see them I have to fight my gamer instincts to not jump at them immediately

and with that... looks like the next game is Psycutlery! it might be weird to play two platforming-focused games at the same time (still in the middle of Metroid Dread) but I've heard that this game is cool and fun. fate has chosen it, so I'm excited to dig in!

finished Zelle! weird and lovely game. if you like oddball rpgmaker horror-type stuff, you should check it out. it's got a really unique energy.

looks like the first game I've landed on is Zelle! I'll mark it on the board and get started on it once I have time. pretty happy with this as the inaugural game! glad I avoided those huge RPG/VN landmines, definitely not ready for them to get dropped on me right away

playing these games as an adult (especially when going for completion) is fun because I can just sense the parts that were hastily thrown together somehow never played the bonus stages until now. they feel like developer test maps, it’s kind of beautiful

now that I've played through all the mainline Windows Touhou games, here's my ranking! titles in alt text. entries are ordered but I'm not sure about any of these placements really (and the dust hasn't settled on FW yet). still don't think I could confidently pick a favorite.

Yeah it's peak: Subterranean Animism, Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, Undefined Fantastic Object, Imperishable Night

Coolest game in the series, miserable to actually play: Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom

A little basic but feels very cohesive: Perfect Cherry Blossom, Hidden Star in Four Seasons, Mountain of Faith

Beautiful and strange thing that I'm forced to hold at arm's length: Fossilized Wonders

Solid but hard to get excited about: Wily Beast and Weakest Creature, Unconnected Marketeers, Double Dealing Character, Ten Desires

I don't like the versus shmups I'm sorry: Unfinished Dream of All Living Ghost, Phantasmagoria of Flower View

making more progress with EarthBound Beginnings! it’s been doable (especially with the occasional nudge from a guide) but these dungeon layouts are something else

low Ascension I know but have you considered picking up the 3 pre-upgraded Adrenalines early in your run. maybe power each of them up so they draw you two additional cards, too. it'll help you play your 3 Serpent Forms. and then you can just duplicate your entire deck right before the final boss

Slay the Spire 2 results screen, for Silent on Ascension 6. It's a 64-card deck with 6 copies of Adrenaline+ (which have been imbued with the thing that makes them draw 2 extra cards), 6 copies of Serpent Form, two upgraded Bullet Times, and basically every relic you can think of that could help you win in the first two turns.

third time’s the charm! she got fully paralyzed twice in a row and I managed to get her to waste a potion early. victory feels pretty good.

took me an embarrassingly long time to win my first run in Slay the Spire 2 but I'm glad it ended up being this one

Slay the Spire 2 results screen. The deck ended up being built around having ton of Strikes (including 4 Perfected Strikes+ at once!) and playing them automatically from the hand with Hellraiser+ and Stampede+. Getting the relic that made the plain Strikes cost 0 certainly helped too, and those two Headbutt cards got a ton of mileage. Also, basic Defends were pretty much my only block cards, using Fasten+ to make them stronger. Fun times.

turns out the solution to the red gargoyles is to not encounter them at all! going further and dealing with the damaging floors is so much better than whatever was going on with some of those treasure rooms. I kind of love how abstract and nightmarish some of these layouts are

finished the Marsh Cave quest! went into the boss with a party weakened from the dungeon. WAR was hit with a RUB and was taken out instantly. but we were able to clutch it out, and SOLI delivered the finishing blow with an attack that did 2 damage. we have proven our strength.
