#Tennis legend Althea Gibson died #OTD in 2003. * First Black player to win a Grand Slam title (1956) & #Wimbledon (1957) * Female Athlete of the Year (AP), 1957 & 1958 * 11 Grand Slam wins * First Black woman to compete on the LPGA Tour, 1964 #SportsHistory
A composite black-and-white image features two historic photographs of Althea Neale Gibson (1927–2003), the trailblazing Black athlete who helped shatter racial barriers in professional sports. On the left, an action shot captures Gibson mid-match on a grass tennis court, charging forward with fierce intensity and physical prowess. She wears a classic, pristine white tennis dress with a pleated skirt billowing around her legs, paired with matching white socks and tennis shoes. Her face is focused in deep concentration as she extends her right arm back, gripping her racket tightly while her left arm balances her athletic frame. An out-of-focus crowd fills the stands in the background. On the right, a triumphant celebration portrait shows Gibson holding the iconic Venus Rosewater Dish after her historic victory at Wimbledon. Shrouded in a heavy white collared track jacket or robe, she beams with an enthusiastic, wide-toothed smile, her short, naturally textured hair neatly styled. In her left hand, she holds a massive, intricately detailed circular silver trophy plate facing the camera, while a massive, vibrant bouquet of celebratory flowers stands at her right hip. An older woman in a wide-brimmed hat smiles warmly from just behind her left shoulder amidst a blurring crowd. The overall mood shifts dynamically from intense, powerful athletic determination to proud, historic joy. This poignant layout encapsulates her barrier-breaking journey to becoming the first Black athlete to win a Grand Slam title.
