Explains the ¥100 jump in the price of half a cabbage I saw yesterday 🙁

This week, I had meetings and work stuff until 8 or 9 pm every night and I am exhausted. Working six hour days has made me soft, my friends. I don’t know how people do it (and I used to work 14 hour days when I had the cafe).

An author. Translating is a good deal of writing and creativity, so mostly nailed it

Ngl friends, it’s been a rough few days for me and my overthinking heart. But last night, I finally got to see the Ato Kagura Troupe perform Aki Jūni Jingi Kagura at their autumn festival. I have heard about the fireworks for years, so glad I got to experience it. More in alt.

Thanks for that. It was a rare case of blood-pounding-in-temples anger and then downright fear for how I was personally singled out when he got back. He knows my name and where I work, ffs. I’m glad at least my office now has a plan of action for things like this.

Objectively I know that I didn’t do anything wrong. I would have been fine if he had been a rational person with a legit concern and not an unwell individual looking to rage at people. It wasn’t ever about me as a person. And yet, somehow, part me of me whispers, “It’s your fault.”

I know I’ve been posting a lot today, but one more thing re: “good girl” conditioning screwing with me: I feel -bad- for making a big thing about what happened and part of me blames myself for it, like if I had stayed calm, it would have been fine, even though the guy screaming from the get go.

Oh, and he came back later that day (after I had left, thank god) to complain -specifically- about me, by name, and about all of the US by extension. All of this is really scary to me.

Growing up, girls are taught not to rock the boat and I really took it to heart. But if I don’t speak up, then problematic men are free to do the same thing to any one of my incredible colleagues, and I can’t stand for that.

My colleagues have come forward to apologize for not stepping up yesterday. I appreciate it, more than they know. And now I’ve looked into what I can do it protect myself for next time, to protect them for next time.

Yet no one said, if you can’t calm down, then this conversation is over. No one said, we are talking in circles, so this conversation is over, please leave. I didn’t even know we -could- say something like that.

I wasn’t calm, I was upset as hell that this entitled man was coddled despite shouting hurtful things, untrue things, for all 30+ colleagues to hear. I tried so hard not to snap, and by the end, my superior who is like a mother to me, had her hand on my knee because she knew I was seconds from rage.

It took him over an hour to leave, but at no point did anyone stop him and say, no more, you have to go. He shouted and raged, and when I emotionally said “This is harassment!”, he shouted that it was not and snapped “Don’t you cry!” when I was on the verge of tears.

He went on a nationalistic tirade against foreign tourists, white people (who he called Anglo-Saxons), the decline of Japan, for over an hour, all while peppering in belittling remarks about me based purely on how I look.

A man came in to the office with a flimsy complaint related to English translation, singled me out by shouting in English to get my attention, and when I did not agree with what he had to say, berated me for my attitude, said I have no business being a translator and international relations

I summarized the policy for my coworkers and got the division head’s permission to share with our office, just to make sure we all know our rights. This kind of thing happens often enough around here that having a handy guide is useful.

My bosses were quick to respond to my report and quick to organize a meeting between us to discuss what to do if (more likely, when) the problematic visitor returns. My colleagues have been very kind. But the fact that the department director did not know what to do when I asked him concerns me.

We should have in-person seminars on these kind of things, not just a 30-minute PowerPoint that focuses mainly on in-office harassment.

Hiroshima Food Snob @hiroshimafoodsnob.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
I had always been told that in cases like this, we have no choice but to hear out problematic visitors, to appease, to hope they vent and leave. But that’s not actually the case. We can, in fact, ask them to leave, and get police involved, if needed.

Spent most of my day researching the customer harassment policy of my workplace because of what happened yesterday. I wrote an email to my two bosses about the incident in detail and read the entire 30 page policy about customer harassment.

Then what are we even doing? It’s unprofessional. I also interpret there and I am dang sure to be prepared, every time. It’s a job! So I did call out this interpreter, gently, but it seemed like she just didn’t care? Like “Eh, well, I’ll probably still forget the next time” — what even?

If you’re being paid handsomely to interpret at an event semi-regularly, and you mispronounce simple words, like sword, and make errors like calling a women a king and a warrior a god, and apparently it’s too much work to look up stuff about the event beforehand,

Dreamt that I got separated from the group and got hopelessly lost on the way to a restaurant. I kept trying to open Line on my phone, but I couldn’t close the photos open on my phone. “But this isn’t a dream!” I reasoned to myself, “Why can’t I use Line if this isn’t a dream?”

He really tapped into some kind of collective nightmare consciousness with his art. I am still traumatized by the story about the spider eggs being laid in someone’s face and then erupting later on like a zit from hell.

You know what I love about Mamdani’s posts about NYC? How he champions diversity by saying that it betters the city. I can’t imagine our mayor doing anything like this (before anyone jumps at me, I know he’s currently in hospital for a serious malignant brain tumor)

A collection of frogs for you in these trying times.
Five digital drawings of "frogs". One is inspired by an Ouroboros, another seems to have a carved turnip for a head, one is a somewhat scrungly witch, another wears a flowery shirt while drinking from a coconut, and finally one of them is "Bimble". Bimble looks like if a rock tried very hard to be a frog and almost succeeded.
