Ireland continue to approve the construction of new data centres which act like parasites on our infrastructure. All so people can generate weird, 6 fingered characters based on stolen artwork.

Article from the Irish Independent (September 3rd, 2024). Text reads:

All the extra renewable electricity produced in Ireland last year was eaten up by the growth in data centres, new analysis shows.

Even though it was a record year for wind and solar farms, their increased output was outpaced by the expanding data centre sector.

Energy experts have likened the situation to making interest-only repayments on a loan, with all efforts going into just standing still.

The analysis from the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) to be published today is likely to place renewed focus on the contentious issue of data centres and their drain on electricity.

It shows total demand for electricity last year grew by 4.4pc, or 1.3 terawatts (TW), but 80pc of that increase, or 1.1TW, was from data centre growth.
Data centres accounted for 20pc of all electricity use in the State, and that figure shows no signs of levelling off.
