#herons #autumnmigration Lots of traveling birds at the wetlands today. Canada geese, white fronted geese, shovelers, mallards, pintails, red-tailed hawk, egrets dancing together in the sky, and this lovely heron tucked in watching for those fish!

#birds #pelicans Every summer the great American white pelicans grace some of the wetlands around the Portland, Oregon ponds. (This is at the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge.) notice the egrets like to hang with them.

#birds #wetlands #herons Only 4 or 5 herons in the rookery with at least 6 spotted around the edge of ponds and lakes. I guess the young are trying their wings. This one didn’t seem bothered by us on the trail. More focused on cleaning up for the day ahead!

The goose parent hissed at us to keep us moving past the young uns! Canada geese are very protective. Rest assured, we stayed as far back as we could and still continue around the lake.

#bittern #wetlandwalk #heron The usually shy American bittern was on the path we walk. The herons were mostly at the rookery, but some were out getting provisions. And the signs of spring were all around. (Sorry the bittern photo does not do this handsome bird justice!)

She was in the tree alone (after the crows stopped harassing her) then she called out and in flew her friend. They made actual musical conversation with each other. Is this courtship? It was a stunning treat on our walk. #baldeagles #birds #Portland

We know they are there but this is only the second time since we have been going to this wetland (started during the pandemic) that we have seen one and the first time was not out in the open. They seem to like it when humans are NOT around.

Yes. It was standing perfectly still and I was trying to get a little closer (we were the only humans at the wetlands due to high water road closures and I think he expected no interruptions!)
