It’s hard to believe that the summer boating season has come to an end up in our neck of the woods. This old gal, 80 years young, will find a fresh exterior come spring. #woodboat #chriscraft #lakelife #Idaho #flyfish
The old Paiute and I making our way down lake as the summer season come to a close. On the trailer and ready for a long winter slumber. My favorite spot for morning coffee after a night moored off the islands.

Ah, yes! That simple little soup is a taste of autumn. Thank you for the nod, Jason. And forgive me if I’m I’m mistaken, but I believe I may have spotted a shout out to you in a somewhat recent Water Time newsletter? #flyfishing #autumn #mushroom #soup

In stealing a couple of hours up the lake before a busy holiday weekend, it’s a delight to quietly shake hands with a few locals. #Idaho #flyfishing #trout #cutthroat
Fly fishing for cutthroat on Idaho’s Priest Lake. This is a typical fish on streamers or small dries. Losing that bubblegum color but always stunning. Another eager Idaho cutthroat in the net for a couple of seconds before being released.

Say, should any of you have dreamed of fishing the famed salmonfly hatch on the Deschutes, my friends at Water Time just had two spots open. Salmonflies started hatching and big rainbows will be looking up. It’s a trip of a lifetime at a great rate. May 14-16 Email: rob@watertimeoutfitters.com

The fishing has come into full season since the family has been in southern Italy these past few weeks. Even as beautiful as it was there, it’s its wonderful to be back. And the returning pursuit was never far from my mind. Piscatorially speaking, I mean.
Romans ply their fishing skills through artwork plastered near The Pantheon. The fish markets throughout every town and city we visited offered heaps of beauty. I fly fished the islands near Capri. She was our vessel.

Had an absolutely delightful Easter on the Priest River with dear friends.
Beautifully healthy brown. Early season, but a promising sign of our healthy, local system. The most civilized of our launches up here; an 80 ft. dirt slide down to the river. Rose and chicken salad, sourdough, and French brie. Wouldn’t change a thing.

If you haven’t already, I’d highly recommend Steve Duda’s “River Songs, Moments of Wild Wonder in Fly Fishing.” And Matthew DeLorme’s woodcut illustrations are outstanding. Published by Mountaineers Books.

I’ve mentioned this in past tributes to The Curtis Creek Manifesto but I still find Sherry’s little tome the best introduction to fly fishing the industry has ever produced. It was my text for an instruction series, “Getting Your Feet Wet”, which bought together friends in the creative industries.

Another dubious sign (an omen?) for the current state of Simms fly fishing and trout fishing in Montana. As Taylor Sheridan’s ridiculously shallow “The Madison” depicts the deep sorrows of big money co-opting yet another of earth’s greatest resources.
Wealthy urbanite-turned-Montana grief refugee Michelle Pfeiffer dons what appears to be a broken-in Simms cap in Taylor Sheridan’s woeful “The Madison” series.

Solitude.
Still too early for the boats to be in the water but it’ll be here soon enough. Can’t wait for the early spring hatches to mark the official start of fly fishing on the upper lake.

Gorgeous morning up here.
Priest Lake and the Selkirks after a fresh snow. My favorite CCC-era cabin, built by the U.S. Forest service in the ‘30s. Now our little museum. The early hatch will begin in a couple of months off the point of Bartoo Island, which we see to the right. It begins the lake fly fishing season and can be epic. Fingers crossed.

Putting together my early spring streamer box following more than a dusting of snow in the front yard. One can dream, am I right?
A mix of favorite streamer patterns (fly fishing flies) for spey and single-hand applications. Sculpin, balanced leech, and variations on a theme. Lost a good sized tree a night or so back to a decent little dump of snow, providing a window toward the meadow. Like a lost tooth. “We need it” (it, being snowpack of any measure) is both true and exhausting. Spring would be okay with me.

This morning at the resort. Spring, it feels, may have sprung.
Spring feels as though it’s sprung early this year up here. But it’s hard not to be a bit excited by the early season fly fishing prospects. Can’t wait to get the boats back in the water.

Wallace and I opted to do some scouting today. About four miles in, three casts, about a thousand sticks thrown.
My favorite fly fishing pal, Wallace. Although we should clarify that she’s best at rolling in moose shit and getting wrapped around my line.

Some of you know that I post semi-regular recipes on the Water Time Outfitters site. If I had more room, I’d park them here, as well. This week, I shared my streamside French Onion Soup, a fitting ode to the French trappers along The Deschutes in Oregon, and those old sourdoughs up here, in Idaho.
A couple of the most important tools of a fly fishing guide. At home or on the river, French Onion Soup reminds me of the old European trappers in parts like these, in as much as it does my favorite Parisian cafe fare.

Fly fishing has picked up a lot of steam over the years, but the fish themselves haven’t changed much. They still eat, spook, and survive the way they always have. Which is why PHEASANT TAIL SIMPLICITY feels, in our humble opinion, like a breath of cold river air. 📚: tinyurl.com/3h58m726
