One of the great things about heirloom pumpkin seeds is you can save the seeds and they grow the same as the pumpkin they came from. In this way, seeds travel all over the world to find new homes on new continents. #delaware #familyfarm #farmlife #pumpkin

When is fig season here in Delaware? We started with a few in late June and now these trees are finally producing in early October. This is all dependent on their winter protection and the winter weather. Keeps us guessing every time. #farmlife #familyfarm #delaware #figs #garden

How to keep squirrels from eating your pumpkins? 1. Use a hot pepper spray. Some squirrels seem to like spicy food, so this does not work on them. 2. Use a barrier, such as a row cover or sheet. Cover each night, weigh the ends down, so it doesn’t blow away. #farmlife #familyfarm #delaware

Who wants to weed? Never any volunteers. Weeding has to be the least favorite activity for anyone in the garden or on the farm. However, maintaining a healthy growing area is essential for healthy plants. #familyfarm #delaware #farmlife #garden

You need to be careful even with organic sprays. Just because something is natural does not mean there are no consequences. Peppermint oil sounds benign, but it can have serious effects. #familyfarm #farmlife #delaware #garden

One of our goals is to always have crops to harvest for our farm market and community supported agriculture customers. We use different types of crops to help us achieve this; both cut and come again and one and done. #familyfarm #farmlife #delaware #garden

How long can we keep planting? Even though our official frost date is mid Oct, we have found that we typically don’t get frost until mid to late Nov. We plant crops that can handle a frost and still do well, but we hope for that late frost! #delaware #familyfarm #farm-life

The growing zone number gives you how cold it can get in winter. This is important for your perennial trees, shrubs, and flowers. You also need to know how hot does it get in the summer, what is the level of humidity as well as the rainfall. #delaware #familyfarm #garden #farmlife #growyourfood

Days to maturity changes with the Seasons. As we had into fall, lower daylight levels and cooler temperatures means that it takes longer for plants to mature. All of these plants can tolerate a frost, but they do not grow at those temperatures. #delaware #familyfarm #farmlife #garden

Pear harvest can be a little tricky. You want to harvest 3 to 4 weeks early and then let the pears sit in cold storage to cure. This gives them the ability to hold for a couple of months, in refrigeration. Otherwise, you have to use up all of the pears in a week. #farmlife #garden #delaware #fruit
