This morning, I have La Vuelta on the tv and the Philly Classic streaming on the computer. In case there's any doubt how much of a dork I am.

And what an effort by Antonia Niedermaier! Great to have a brilliant, young #2 rider on the team

KASIA!!! The rider that got me hooked on following the women's tour/races, and the reason why I have a Canyon//SRAM jersey. So, so happy for her!

Also, I did acquire the Canyon//SRAM jersey, because I'm a giant dork. Yes, it can be a real, usable cycling jersey. Yes, it's a men's cut. And yes, I probably should have sized up, but this actually does fit me. Maybe just a little extra motivation to drop a couple more pounds 😅

It's Vontoux day for the TdFF! Annoyed that the live coverage doesn't start until 2 hours into the race but hopefully that's still the entire climb up the mountain today.

In keeping with my normal "completely random post once every 3 weeks" routine... The updated finish to the Tour de France is, once again, fantastic. Last year showed what it can be, even in the rain. Updated and clear weather this year? Beautiful battle all the way to the line!

most irritating part of "how can you root for the US did you know we are bad" is why the fuck do you think I got here without thinking about all this and coming to my own peace with it why do I have to be in the slow lane with you, ever you missed this meeting I'm not giving you my notes

And Vontoux has been conquered! Completely killed me today - just huge sections of 10+ gradients on the early portion of the climb just destroyed my legs. Very much a leisure ride to the top, but also very happy to have accomplished this one!

Col de la Couillole today. 11.2 miles, just shy of 4,000 feet of total climbing. The >15% sections sucked and killed my cadence, but I felt surprisingly "good" for this entire ride. I'm aiming for Vontoux in June, but today's ride confirmed for me that I'm ready for it!

Ok, this could have gone much worse. And there's still a few final touches (putting in the shelves on the one unit, putting in the additional clothes rod and shelf in the one corner). But very much an improvement over the old setup.

Did the Bealach na Ba climb today - less of a Vontoux prep, and more out of solidarity with La Vuelta Femenina climbing L'Angliru tomorrow. Climb profile is below, and that still doesn't show the 20%+ incline sections. Suffice to say, I'm still not a great mountain climber 😅

Ha! As someone who has tried these gels for my long rides, this tagline is incredibly apt. There's no flavor, and the texture is indescribably weird. It's something you have to "get used to." There are also other better tasting gels on the market, so my Maurten experience was a one-and-done.

And adding today's next big climb - Col du Tourmalet. 10.7 miles, 3993 feet of climbing, 1:21:37 climb time. Big mountains and steep inclines are still not my forte, but happy to summit.

Zwifting thread - sorry for the boring! This year's goal is to do the Mont Vontoux climb, in honor of the TdFF climbing the summit for the first time this year. No way I can do this climb "cold", so I'm trying to get in the other big climbs to help prepare. 11.8 miles, 4859 feet of climbing.

It's from the Great British Bake-Off, so 'pudding' in this sense is really a gingerbread cake. Made it 7-8 years ago and it's been on the menu every year since. (Any recipe that calls for 1Tbsp of ginger is on the right track for me!) Daily Mail has the recipe - www.dailymail.co.uk/lifestyle/fo...

Due to career-related moves, I usually spend Thanksgiving on my own (and travel to family for Christmas/New Year). But I love cooking/baking/eating, so I still make myself a full meal every year of "solo Thanksgiving". Here's this year's menu:
2025 Thanksgiving Day Menu
Breakfast: Apple Crisp
Appetizers: Baked Brie with Accoutrements: Rosemary Crackers, Roasted Pears, Prosciutto, Fig Jam
Appetizer 2: Mushroom Arancini

Entree: Turkey Roulade with Apple, Cranberry, and Walnut Stuffing
Side 1: Port & Cranberry Chutney
Side 2: Fondant Potatoes
Side 3: Roasted Brussels Sprouts & Carrots

Desserts: Ginger and Pear Pudding; Toffee Biscotti

A couple of thoughts on tonight: - Happy to have helped Radford go blue again in another election (with some heavy lifting from the students) - While it's the next house district over from me, very happy to see Lily Franklin on the verge of flipping that VA house seat blue!

My favorite brewery just happens to be on the way to/from said apple orchard, so a stop was necessary on the way home. (Their marzen is on tap, a few things make me happier than a good Oktoberfest style beer)

Three years ago, I made the random decision to take a 40 minute drive to a local orchard for some apple picking. It has become my favorite annual tradition once September hits. Another beautiful morning for some apple picking
Rows of apple trees line a grassy path to the horizon, with clear, blue skies and mountains in the backdrop.

But really - this is evil. It's a 12.5km climb at the end of a 200km race day, which has extended sections that are over 20% gradient over the final kms. Just brutal (and why I enjoy watching pro cycling)

I've been full-go with my (indoor) cycling and Zwift bike/app over the past few months, enjoying the rides and getting better on routes and racing. And today's La Vuelta stage that ends on L'Angliru is a reminder as to why indoor virtual cycling is where I'll continue to live.

In less depressing news, I’ve fully switched from running to indoor cycling. And now I’m fully in the Zwift world - loving life as a mediocre cyclist in that very international virtual cycling world. Now that the Tour de France has started, it’s just a full cycling geek out this month😄
