I’m planning some fermentation projects and I’m delighted to say that the GEM Cultures website is still the most web 1.0 site ever, where the biggest concession to modernity that if you don’t want to mail a check you can email their juno dot com address for their paypal info

I saw this today and immediately thought of this article I read in 2019 that talks about not only why trees haven’t been planted but also why they’ve been actively removed in lower income areas: placesjournal.org/article/shad...
Requests to deforest are common in heavily policed areas, where shade is perceived as a magnet for drug dealing and prostitution. In the early 2000s, the L.A. Police Department began installing security cameras in high-crime areas of the city, and it asked city crews to cut back trees that obscured sightlines. Eventually, street cops submitted so many requests that the overwhelmed forestry department started recommending tree removal in places where "regular maintenance" was not feasible.
Officially, the city has no policy about removing shade for surveillance purposes, but it happens: public housing courtyards, including Jordan Downs's, are bare of trees, and when a new pole camera goes up in a public park, the mature canopy around it vanishes. On private property, the approach is more informal. "It's not that the police have the authority to say, you can't plant trees here," explained Michael Pinto, a principal at NAC Architecture who specializes in community design-build projects. "It's that they have convinced community leaders that, if you want to save your community, you can't have too many trees, because it restricts [the police's] ability to do their jobs." Conspicuously, there are no benches. I asked Agence Ter landscape designer Lauren Hamer about that. Shade creates shelter, she said. "And Los Angeles obviously has a very conflicted position towards creating shelter in the public realm," which is reflected in attitudes toward homelessness. "Public spaces need to be open, so that people can move across them, as opposed to gathering there." She cited a failed 1986 proposal by James Wines, which would have transformed the park into a miniature of the city itself - a "magic carpet" of different micro-climates, each module locked in a grid. Although Wines won an open design competition, his park was never funded or built. Hamer said she thought that was because it would be too inviting: "a place for people to hang out."It's easy to see how this hostile design reflected the values of the peak automobile era, but there is more going on here. The destruction of urban refuge was part of a long-term strategy to discourage gay cruising, drug use, and other
"shady" activities downtown. In 1964, business owners sponsored another redesign that was intended, in the hyperbolic words of the Los Angeles Times, to finally clear out the "deviates and criminals." The city removed the perimeter benches and culled even more palms and shade trees, so that office workers and shoppers could move through the park without being "accosted by derelicts and 'bums." Sunlight was weaponized. "Before long, pedestrians will be walking through, instead of avoiding, Pershing Square," the Times declared. "And that is why parks are built."")

I just saw that someone I used to partner with for pop ups is now advertising that they’re the pick up location for a bakery whose website is 100% AI generated with no personal information, no reviews, and no posted menu. $10 says this is the owner thinking she can turn a quick buck, lol

I’m about to start #8 of the Aubrey/Maturin books and has any character ever been more relatable than Jack Aubrey when he would rather be risking his life at sea in the midst of a war than at home dealing with his money and relationship problems?

I’m having a week where I’m simultaneously thinking “oh shit shouldn’t have quit working for others, everything is getting so much more expensive” and also “thank god I stopped working for others, I couldn’t handle all the shit people are dealing with”

People handle tasks so complex and with so many shifting variables as part of our day-to-day existence that the complexity is underestimated. It’s like how knitting machines have existed for over 400 years but there still isn’t a machine that can crochet, though we think of those tasks as comparable

Every time someone posts another AI exec saying something dumb (today is Jensen Huang, tomorrow it will be someone else), I think about Monk And Robot. Because the questions all this raises for me are about why we choose to learn or master something, and what that means to a person.

I was wondering about this, I knew that farmers paid less for diesel but I guess not that much less (diesel sold for farming is tinted pink, so inspectors can dip your tank in non-farm vehicles to see if you’re misusing it)
Diesel prices are rising as harvest begins across the country. The national average on-highway diesel price reached $6.285 per gallon, up more than $2.50 from the same week last year. Farm diesel prices are also climbing, reaching $5.45 per gallon on Sept. 4, up from $3.02 a year earlier.

Crude oil prices have increased about 14% since the beginning of September while inventories remain low.

One month! Some kind of bug or disease is making the new leaves curl though so I’m going to try to use it up this week. Maybe I’ll grab a new bunch next week if I see it at the market, I’m wondering if it would keep over the winter with some nutrients in the water (probably!)

My brother bought a t-shirt with this image on it today, just thought I’d share
Close up of the image on a dark grey t-shirt, it’s a red dragon sitting on its haunches with a blue-cloaked warrior standing in front of the dragon with a finger on its nose. The caption says “boop”

I’m still thinking about Coyote vs Acme, not so much about the movie itself (exactly what I expected) but about distribution, earnings and so on. Opening weekend it played on one screen in my hometown (of 20 screens total), and one screen in the next town (9 screens total)

When I was a kid my mom’s neighborhood was full of teachers, city workers, etc. and everyone would mow their lawn on Saturdays. Now only rich people can afford homes here and everyone has gardeners and maids, so it’s like a Richard Scarry book every day around 9:00 am when all the workers show up.

Your annual summertime reminder that cut fresh basil will live very happily in water and grow roots again, so it keeps for months if you keep the water fresh and topped up. This bunch two weeks old

Living next door to young kids is so great sometimes. A little kid next door just greeted his dad arriving home from work with “Hi person! Do you like how green I am?” There’s a hedge in the way so I can’t tell which kind of green he is (frog green? tree green?) but it’s pretty charming

My most strongly held cheese opinion is that sheep’s milk cheese is superior to cow or goat milk cheese. The exception that proves the rule is pecorino vs Parmesan, but that’s more about the difference in salinity and aging. A sheep’s milk cheese made just like aged Parmesan would be spectacular

Here’s the thing about people backing in to park: it always startles me when they pull out again. If you park head in, brake lights go on when you start the car. Put the car in reverse and that light goes on too. There are no lights on the front to show you’re about to pull out of the parking spot!
