Funny they literally turned all the parking into trees. West End looks like a forest.

Yes! I'm genuinely excited that we're moving on from the urban renewal, concrete jungle craze of the 60-70s. Before I.M. Pei died, he said it was "more muscular and aggressive than I'd do today." It would be interesting to see something gentler take its place.

Adolphus Hotel exists bc City Hall 3 was sold to beer-baron Adolphus Busch. Of all ways history could repeat, this is a nicer one. Evening foot traffic from Mavs/Stars/Wings combined w/ day traffic of City Hall returning to Elm-Main-Commerce could tip scales to fill many vacant retail space on EMC.

Team "Save City Hall" paid for ad w/ droid from Robocop. From fun art perspective, I think it's cute! But also it's a reminder of another reason I'm cool w/ tearing it down: if CH5 is a DALLAS icon, why is it most known for being the HQ of an evil mega-corporation in crime-ridden DETROIT?

Not the worst idea TBH. Literally took train to go that Best Buy today. Make City Hall part of larger TOD redevelopment. I bet staff will love hanging out after work at Dave & Busters.

✅ Double parking fee ✅ Reduce admission 50% ✅ Instead of price-fixing vendors INSIDE fair, promote & subsidize permanent bizs AROUND fair This would support local establishments, increase foot traffic to Expo Park, spur vendors to compete on price, and enhance variety of food options.

Oddly, to get the Northpark Center, the DART trip planner's top 2 recommendations are identical: GoLink from 2nd closest station. 3rd rec same issue on opposite side. Only 4th rec alights from closest station.

This Saturday has a surplus of interesting events happening simultaneously throughout the day. It's hard to decide which to attend and which to miss!

IG continues to be most common way ppl learn about @dallasurbanists.org, thus 1st impression is largely determined by the upkeep of profile grid. Recent evidence: today I onboarded new volunteer who'd never even heard of Strong Towns before. Signed up solely from past 2 months of IG activity.

What I'm working on tonight: volunteer instructions for daily maintenance of the @dallasurbanists Instagram profile. This is not about crafting new content. Rather, it's about: * Fielding inbound comments/messages * Updating story highlights * (Un)pinning grid posts * Scheduling reminders posts

One would hope that if Plano residents vote to stay in DART, that would quell further legislative efforts. However, the timeline presented at their special session last night shows they have their sights on 2027 regardless of voter outcome.

Oooo well tearing down #Dallas City Hall is on table, I humbly suggest revisiting Art Deco Municipal Center design from 1946 Dallas Master Plan. ✅ Visually link City Hall ↔ Hall of State in Fair Park ✅ Easily fits footprint of current structure ✅ Beautiful to all, not just brutalism-savants

What if we had @bucees.bsky.social in a DART Station? Imagine if Buc'ees opened in the high-speed rail station 💡
EBJ Union Station in the foreground with Reunion Tower in the background, with the ball at the top of the tower glowing with the iconic Buc'ees mascot. To the right, a high speed bullet train passes behind Union Station.

"We're Winning the Housing Fight but Losing the Transportation Fight. Why?" * "Freeway Industrial Complex" * Urban transportation reform unlocks "scalable urbanism" * Housing abundance and reducing car dependency are anti-poverty initiatives

* Climate change = more risk of fires, flood, extreme temps = higher ins. premiums = lower affordability * Don't zone in harms way; educate buyers to account for costs of risk; require resilience in building code * Reparative: hold oil companies & DOTs liable for actions that increase risk

Pro #publictransit tip: Don’t want to walk the last mile from bus stop in the summer heat? Instead of just deboarding at the closest stop, use the DART GoPass app to find a bus stop with a nearby Lime or Bird scooter. Did this today—saved 10 minutes and made it to my appointment on time!

"I've gotten so many blank stares at the idea that a street should be a place in its own right." Central part of @dallasurbanists.org mission is to change the local conversation in Dallas about what a street can and should be.

"Do the next small thing" I need to remind myself this more often, especially as I chip away at applying all the lessons learned from National Gathering.
Group photo of seven Strong Towns National Gathering attendees from North Texas plus Chuck Marohn doing "strong" pose at front steps of Grace Episcopal Church in Providence, Rhode Island.
