There are major account take-over problems happening right now on mastodon instances - all appearances are that the actor is using stolen passwords, probably from malware running on desktops. I've suspended hundreds of compromised accounts over the past 48 hours, but only two on mine. If you […]

Legitimacy is the currency of power. Every time the system attacks someone or something, they spend it. How much they spend is a function of how effectively legibility can be translated from the dominant system to those who must support that system. If people come to understand that the […]

I think there are some pieces missing here. Hosting does scale down poorly, but it only scales poorly because of how we host. There *is* an increased cost and complexity to shutting down small sites. If we can change the way we host, make it easier to replicate, then there *is* an asymmetry. It […]

AI does not disrupt. AI entrenches. AI turns money into more money; AI turns investment into dependency. We are living in a funhouse mirror of that right now where the combination of overly-plausible demos and first-one's-free incentives are swamping the actual balance-sheet math. But the […]

It's also very frustrating to constantly have my opposition to AI be taken as an opposition to abstraction, or to automation, and a desire to do every little thing by hand. But it's the opposite. For a whole bunch of reasons, AI anti-abstracts. It adversarially creates oceans of duplication to […]

app.opencve.io
CVE-2026-99999 - Vulnerability Details - OpenCVE
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ipv4: validate checksum_start before completing checksum If a packet with bad checksum metadata gets into the ipv4 stack, skb_checksum_help can corrupt the network header and cause a bunch of mischief. This was discovered and reported by Paulos, and has been reporoduced by others independently since. We really shouldn't allow such packets in, but as a defence in depth measure, let's also check before we complete the checksum. A more complete validation at input is forthcoming, but needs more work.

Everyone, I have a suggestion: New Skill November. #NewSkillNovember
NEW SKILL NOVEMBER

[an art nouveau painting in autumn colors of a woman playing the harp]

LEARN A NEW SKILL OR REBUILD AN OLD ONE; THE ONLY RULE: DO IT YOURSELF, DO NOT USE AI

Sketching, knitting, whittling, a musical instrument, a foreign language, a tricky video game, cooking, weaving, changing oil, riding a bike, painting, pixel art, website design, digital image editing, bookbinding, calligraphy, identifying mushrooms, embroidery, soldering, that one thing you've been putting off

Do the hard part yourself, no matter how imperfect it feels. Learn and internalize how it really works. Consult guides written by human experts, and ask your fellow human beings for help. Take pride in knowledge and abilities that are an intrinsic part of your existence and not dependent on renting from corporations.

There is, of course, some nuance here. While there can be systems that use people, these very same systems (or related systems) may not use others and may be used by them. I *think* that the flow of agency is not about the system in use but about the way it is used and the person using it or […]

@simon_brooke Humans are interesting in that we are non-Malthusian individually but can act either as Malthusian or non-Malthusian organisms depending on ideology. So I might argue that it's not humans that are Malthusian, but the state and capitalism.
