had a good time at the St. Stan festival tonight. Usually I scope out the scene and bail in about half an hour but tonight I ended up eating dinner with some folks from my parish & hearing a lot of great Catholic Worker & CW-adjacent community organizing and radical hospitality stories.

I feel like everyone involved with this was like HAHA THIS IS JUST A JOKE but I remember just how weirdly desperate all the ways to make him stay felt back then. Hanif Abdurraqib had a great bit about it.
And for those who haven't seen this, I would encourage you to go home and, YouTube this. It is a delight. The song is called "We Are LeBron." And if you are right now counting syllables in your head, wondering if this is a riff off of We Are the World. You have already done the required math to understand this level of desperation. Instead of chart topping singers clustered together in a studio. This version was populated by local news anchors politicians including Ted Strickland, the actual governor of Ohio at the time, a TV lawyer known for his absurd commercials, and alumni of MTV's The Real World, among others. When I said back there that the song doesn't take itself too seriously, what I meant to say, I think, was that it is impossible to tell how seriously the song is or isn't taking itself. Some of this is simply because the vocal performances of the involved parties. Most of the people can't sing and don't really try, but every now and then there is a perfectly stitched together, two part harmony between a meteorologist and a county clerk. The uneven nature, the uneven nature of the cast itself also leads to confusion about the song's urgency. The song is both a production and not one of those things that many of us know all too well. Built off the notion of of course I'm joking with one. I turn toward a reaction and in unless underneath the tongue. If there's something to be admired about the song. From my point of view. Lover of the pleading valid. I am lover of the too late sobbing lover of the person leaning against a makeshift wall of packed boxes, refusing to move until they can state their case just one last time. I must say, I truly admire how shameless the lyrics of this curse collaborative tune are, how, under many other circumstances, these type of pleas would be at best whispered in a prayer heard by no one but whatever divine power they're being sent up to.

part of why everyone needs a religious studies class is that the local architecture group is debating where this church is and what tradition it's in and people keep saying it's Greek Orthodox because of the color because they've never been inside literally any Orthodox church.

If any of my fellow ethnics can tell me I'm wrong here, I'm still very weirded out by this nostalgia for eastern bloc housing because someone saw a museum with a cool photo of it. Also, like, Warsaw is not in the USSR come ON.

side note: Does the OP know that Warsaw is not in the USSR?

omg:
"At the height of the Cultural Revolution in the mid-1960s, Mao spent his free time surrounded by numerous seventeen and eighteen-year-old girls from time to time, but always spent most of his time with Zhang Yufeng. According to the French sinologist Alain Roux, until 1970, Mao had suspicions of Zhang, as he learned that her real father was supposedly a Japanese dentist and not a Chinese railway worker, and assumed that she could turn out to be a Japanese spy. But in 1970, she was appointed as Mao's secretary of household affairs. From that moment on, she constantly accompanied Mao. Due to her position, she was able to comfortably house her parents in an apartment in Beijing.

Zhang supported Mao Zedong during his historical meeting with U.S. President Richard Nixon. By 1973, Zhang Yufeng had become the main go-between Mao and the rest of the world. Even Mao's wife, Jiang Qing, could not visit her husband without Zhang's permission. There was an instance when Zhang did not let the Premier of China Zhou Enlai see Mao.[9][10]

Mao's health declined in his last years, probably aggravated by his heavy chain-smoking... At this time, the political weight of Zhang especially increased because Mao's speech became completely unintelligible due to illness, and only Zhang understood him well. From 1972, Zhang Yufeng helped Mao Zedong to eat and decided if he was able to receive visitors or not. By the summer of 1974, Mao's state of health had deteriorated so much that Zhang was able to understand him by the movement of his lips and gestures. At the end of 1974, Zhang was formally appointed Mao's secretary for critical and confidential assignments. She strictly controlled and restricted access to Mao. Jiang Qing, who desperately needed Mao's support in the internal party struggle, tried to appease Zhang, but failed.[11]

In 1974, according to the sinologist Jonathan Spence:[12]

She [Zhang] literally becomes Mao's interface with the world, in fact the latter can no longer …

this is really niche but ever since I learned about Tibetan zombie lore and esoteric texts about Buddha teaching his followers how to fight back, I've wanted that action movie ever since.
Academic article excerpt quoting esoteric Tibetan texts involving Buddha explaining to his followers how to fight off zombies.
"They take him before theBhagavan, who has come there at his pleasure, and who
asks him what suffering he has. Ānanda explains, and Buddha says:) "Oh, Ānanda!
Those very powerful *MahavetalaK who have touched you are very difficult to tame,
and even if they just see you, they have seven injuries (to inflictupon you). If you ask
who these are, theyare called 'Holding a Garland', 4
Holding a Jewel', 'Fierce', Ter-
rible', 'Peacock's Heart', 'Life Consumed', and 'La Bean'.9 These seven Mahavetāla
are great instrength, difficult totame, difficult to propitiate; and, their powers of de-
ception and magic are great. Ānanda, each of these Vétala could, ifhe wished, cast
down even Mount Meru, King of Mountains, with the toe of his leftfoot; itwould be
completely reduced, untilitwas about thesize of a mustard seed. If each looked up-
wards, he could make theearth split open; if each looked inthecardinal directions,
there would be death inthem; ifeach looked intheintermediate directions, they would
be burned by fire.Itis theythathave touched you!"
(The Tathāgata now tells Ānanda that he will be cured by the Tathāgata's power,
by respectfully listening to the Dharma- i.e., learning the dhāraņī which follow-
and by the Tathāgata's blessing. Ānanda now requests the means to deflect their
power, to bind them with mudrãs, and to bind them with threads [skudpa]. The text
now becomes a recitation of dhāraņī for the Vétala, referred to as both Bhūta and
Mahābhūta. The number of magic knots [mdud] which must be cast [ 'bor/ 'dor] to
bind each Vetāla differ, as do the number of recitations of the dhāraņī which must
accompany the binding. The combination of these actions results in the "stiffen-
ing" or "paralyzing" [rengs pa = stabdha or stambhana] of the Vetāla, which is one
way threatening spirits are dealt with.10)

CPD statement on Flock cameras catching urbexers and a photo of a bunch of cameras, a crowbar, and a pair of bolt cutters.

CLEVELAND- On July 13, 2026, officers from the Cleveland Police Fifth District were advised by the Cleveland Metropolitan School District Board of Education Security of two individuals who had been observed and were suspected of unlawfully entering two separate school properties. The suspects were believed to have entered Kenneth W. Bennett School, located at 14311 Woodworth Avenue, and Euclid Park School, located at 17914 Euclid Avenue.
Officers responded to both locations to investigate; however, the suspects were no longer on scene. Officers immediately contacted the Cleveland Police Real Time Crime Center (RTCC), which confirmed that a white Honda Civic had entered and exited the parking lots of both properties. RTCC also confirmed the descriptions of the individuals involved.
Later that evening, officers were in the area of East 152nd Street and St. Clair Avenue when they heard an audible alarm sounding from the former Collinwood High School building. With the assistance of RTCC, officers confirmed that the same suspect vehicle was present at that location. Officers also confirmed that the individuals matched the descriptions provided in the earlier incidents.
Officers conducted an investigatory stop near East 152nd Street and Thames Avenue. During the stop, officers made contact with the occupants of the vehicle and confirmed that all three individuals matched the descriptions provided by Board of Education Security personnel and captured on security cameras. A review of Flock camera images further confirmed that the suspects had traveled to each of the reported locations and had unlawfully entered the properties.

Now that I'm done with eyerolling at fancy UK restaurants named after the region my ancestors came from, I just ordered this through the library and am very glad someone decided to write a book about labor history and the Polish enclave in the greater Wheeling area.
Wheeling's Polonia: Reconstructing Polish Community in a West Virginia Steel Town

Wheeling was a center of West Virginia’s labor movement, and Polish immigrants became a crucial element within the city’s active working-class culture. Arriving at what was also the center of the state’s Roman Catholic Diocese, Poles built religious and fraternal institutions to support new arrivals and to seek solace in times of economic strain and family hardship. The city’s history of crime and organized vice also affected new immigrants, who often lived in neighborhoods targeted for selective enforcement of Prohibition.
At once a deeply textured evocation of the city’s ethnic institutions and an engagement with larger questions about belonging, change, and justice, Wheeling’s Polonia is an inspiring account of a diverse working-class culture and the immigrants who built it.

In other news, I will never get over people spelling noted northwest Ohio parrothead party island as "Putin Bay," though there is a guy who writes local trashy Tom Clancy style beach books with that vibe.
Book blurb on Bob Adamov book called "Sunset Blues."
Russians are the bad guys in "Sunset Blues," 14th in Bob Adamov's series about Emerson Moore, a journalist based in Put-in Bay. Not just any Russians, but Russians with a grudge against Moore.
Moore is returning to Ohio from Virginia after learning that his aunt, with whom he lives, has disappeared after her house exploded. The fire department confirms that the blast was intentional, but police have no theories about the motive. Moore notices that a new taxi service has come to the island, operating black London-style taxis. A friend tells him the company is operated by a Russian living in Detroit and that there have been incidents with passengers about "certain transactions."
A cursory look at the taxi garage reveals nothing, so Moore and another friend head to Detroit, where Moore learns that the transactions are likely drugs. He later learns that the Russian carries a grudge against him that goes back to Book Nine, 2015's "Missing," in which Moore was brainwashed into thinking he was a hit man working for a mobster.
With a tip that Aunt Anne has been taken to Florida's Key West, Moore and his friend head south, where they join an assemblage of men of fortune who are all too eager to storm the compound, as long as they have ample time to drink rum, ogle women at the pool and head on down to the local café for grouper sandwiches. Moore grows increasingly frustrated with their frivolity and makes his own ill-advised raid.
Drone technology helps with surveillance and a seemingly inexhaustible supply of automatic weapons makes for next-level violence. "Sunset Blues" likely has the most gunfights and highest body counts in this series, and the villains' brutality is especially shocking. - Akron Beacon Journal, June 2022

"Alongside billionaires, defense contractors and tech oligarchs, Bibb appears to be the only elected Democrat to speak in the summit’s history since launching in 2024..." dakotahsays.beehiiv.com/p/cleveland-...
Alongside billionaires, defense contractors and tech oligarchs, Bibb appears to be the only elected Democrat to speak in the summit’s history since launching in 2024.

Bibb’s decision to appeal to a conservative base is part of a pattern of behavior. In 2024, Bibb appeared on a podcast hosted by a Republican megadonor, and in 2025 publicly called immigrants “illegals” and said that people are “tired of the resistance.” Earlier this spring, he collaborated with Trump's Department of Justice to try and overturn Cleveland’s decade-long consent decree. (A federal judge ruled within weeks that Cleveland police had not satisfied the terms of the agreement, calling the request to end it “surely premature.”) For years, Bibb has tried to push through multiple contracts with controversial surveillance companies such as ShotSpotter and Flock.

Strangely, Bibb himself is not listed as a speaker in the June 2 press release announcing the lineup for Reindustrialize. The primary public evidence of his involvement comes from a conference announcement on LinkedIn and a few pictures attendees snapped with the mayor. Both of Bibb’s own social media accounts are uncharacteristically quiet about his participation. The City of Cleveland also did not issue a press release and has not posted anything publicly either.
