This is really important, so I shared it with alt-text.
A four cell-cartoon created by Sophie Labelle titled "What is Democratic Backsliding?" The first cell depicts a giant banner of Trump hanging from a government building and reads "Authoritarianism in the twenty-first century tends to appear through what is called a process of 'democratic backsliding' (also called 'autocratiziation') rather than through a traditional coup. This allows the new regime to claim some kind of legitimacy. The second cell is black with a white silouette of Trump and reads "Democratic backsliding is when an elected executive uses power to subvert democratic institutions by attacking fair and free elections, suppressing freedom of speech, press, and association, or weakening the rule of law." The third cell depicts several Nazi SA stormtroopers and reads "According to political scientists Mettler and Liberman, there are four key characteristics that provide the conditions for democratic backsliding: political polarization, racism and nativism, economic inequality, and excessive executive power." The last cell depicts the White House and reads "In a report published in September 2025, the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance found that 54% of the world's countries experienced economic backsliding in the past year. That includes the United States."

In my perpetual search for quality and accurate games set in Korea or Japan, I got a hold of Thousands Arrows published by @evilhat.bsky.social. We’ll see if I bounce off the PbtA elements, but at first glance it looks interesting! And you gotta love that cover by @yoshiyoshitani.bsky.social .
The cover for the game Thousand Arrows, a Roleplaying game of samurai drama by James Mendez Hodes. The illustration shows a young woman dressed in Sengoku period black and red armor. She holds a matchlock musket with plum blossom details. She also wears a wide-brimmed back hat with a veil that hides part of her face so only a single eye stares out menacingly. Behind her, the title of the game appears in stylized font over a tenshu, or the keep of a Japanese castle, silhouetted by red flames

My copy of @annablackwell.bsky.social ‘s #ttrpg For Small Creatures Such As We and the three supplements arrived today! One or two dinged corners, but considering the horrific state of the box, that is a blessing that they arrived in the state they did!
The four books, the main manual, the A guide to Fauna expansion, the Love and Lust expansion and the War expansion. The box that the USPS and Royal mail used to be the books to me. As you can see, it is in very rough shape and someone had to actually tape it back together in transit

Today’s #bookbinding project was not a TTRPG for once. This time I was binding a personal copy of an ebook I recently got about the philosophy of Mòzǐ. For context, Mòzǐ was a philosopher from the Spring and Autumn period who developed a rival movement (Mohism) to what we today call Confucianism.

Decided to try a new #bookbinding experiment this week based on something I saw in a 2009 presentation by Betsy Palmer Eldridge. It seems to have come out well!
The view of a freshly stitched book’s spine. The main feature is the center, where a double width bias tape has been flattened and a slit cut in the middle of it. This allows the binder to stitch through the middle of the tape while still giving the book the flexibility to shift.

Note that, while the threads look like they jump up to the next signature in the book, they actually do not. It is an illusion of the link or lap stitch made on the next pass pulling it up just like a French link stitch seen in the two tapes to either side of the center tape.A view of the spine from above to clearly show where the tape was cut to facilitate the stitching. An illustration showing the original stitch I was doing a variation of from the presentation, Stitches and Sewing’s for Bookbinding Structures. Unlike in my example, this version has the thread span over both sides of the support tape on each signature.

The kids fell in love with the shipbuilding system from Traveller so I decided to bind them a copy of the 2022 version of High Guard. I think it’s my best #TTRPG #bookbinding to date. Decided to sew the cover to reduce strain on the end papers a bit and make it easier to glue them on straight.

Why did it take me this long to think about doing this to reinforce my endpapers so the stitches won’t risk ripping through? 🤦

Not sure if this fact is true, but you could have easily just used a picture of the original cover. The image could have also been chosen because it seems to depict the playing of a ball game in a stylized manner.

Working through a stitching backlog, so tonight we are sewing together the core book for the #TTRPG, Land of Eem (@landofeem.bsky.social) with some more homespun thread, this one using grass green, tan, cream, and grey. Looking forward to seeing if my kids like this as much as they liked BREAK!!
The spine stitching with standard kettle stitches on the ends, two tapes stitched across for reinforcement, and two close chains of Coptic stitch in the middle of the two tapes. There is also a slight miscount because the stitching along the tapes is twisted together in sections of three, but there are 10 signatures when including the sewn-in endpages, so one set of endpages stands free. The title page for the Land of Eem core rule book , showing the gold and intricately stylized title.

This page isn't super-critical as it is a quick-reference summary and I understand the handwritten text based on the setting, but the first three pages of this #TTRPG book could have used an accessibility pass because of colors. Going to remove the background and share if there is an improvement.
A small portion of a page from the Salvage Union TTRPG that shows black, blue, and red handwritten-appearing text on a pumpkin orange background. Underneath the text is a blue black and red illustration to show the relative scale differences of Campaigns, Region maps, and Area Maps.

The text reads:
Map Movement
Campaign Map:
Crawler or Pilot = 1 point in a week
Mech = 1 point in a day
Region Map:
Crawler or Pilot = 1 point in a day
Mech = 1 point in an hour
Area Map:
Crawler or Pilot = 1 point in an hour
Mech = One point in 10 minutesThe section of text described on the previous page shown in context. This is the third page of the Salvage Union PDF. The page is organized into a wide column on the left side of the page taking up about 2/3 of the page and a more narrow column on the right. The section described previously takes up about half of the right column. This page is actually better organized than the second page, which makes this page a little easier to read.

The name is group appears above and below the logo map in a large black serif typeface.

My favorite is a tie between Yoshi Yoshitano’s based on The Little Mermaid and one created by the Korean artist Bana. Both take a different approach than the typical in their own way.
A tarot card called the fool with art by Yoshi Yoshitano. The image depicts a mermaid resting on a rock poking up out of the sea. She looks up longingly at a distant castle on a cliff edge. Below the mermaid, many fish jump from the water, splashing back into the sea. Picture of another Fool tarot card illustration. This one shows a youth in fine Korean Joseon-era clothing. His outfit and the wooden mask show he is a member of a traveling dance troope. He is surrounded by red and white poppy flowers and black butterflies. A white sun shines behind him in a yellow sky. Stylized blue waves line the bottom edge of the illustration, giving the impression of being far below the Fool. Together, they represent fantasy, freedom, and joyful enthusiasm.

Okay, National Park it is. I was leaning that way, but glad my thoughts were going the same way. Let the writing begin! (Yes, I am being lazy and laying out the doc as I write it in Pages. 😅)
The cover for “An Arch for All Nations” a guided setting for To Lay a Foundation. The cover features a photograph of a natural stone arch. Blurry flowers dot the foreground over which the title and subtitle are. A person, dwarfed by the stone arch, is silhouetted by the Sun that is just barely obscured by the upper left limb of the arch.

Partly. I wanted to make a realistic bound copy of my game “Sageuk” and Covid allowed me the time. Can’t find any pictures of my finished copy on my phone right now though. 🫤
