NB: I have diverged from West's text by adding a diaeresis to the first -υ- in ἐϋσφύρῳ in order to make the scansion a bit more clear. There are two instances of correption in this line (which is very annoying).

Another handbook I have nearby says it's sometimes called 'epic correption' which also conveys this implication.

ὣς φάτο Ἡσίοδος @hesiod-bot.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I don't have a bunch of statistics on this to hand, but West, Greek Metre (1982: 11), says 'sometimes' and implies that it's less common in some later authors, so it seems that it's optional, albeit much more commonly found in early epic than other authors.
2. CorreptionA. long vowel, diphthong, or triphthong (εηι, εωι), especially at word-end, is sometimes shortened before another vowel. At word-end this is commonest in early epic andelegy; it also occurs to some extent in later hexameters and elegiacs and in lyric (in drama particularly in Sophocles). The shortened syllable is practically always preceded or followed by a naturally short syllable.

I think καὶ can only be read as long here since it's at the beginning of the metrical foot.
