I think the latter is the correct way to construe "mind". I'm sort of an eliminativist of all mental categories, and I argued this in my MA thesis. Tho in a rather different way than behaviorism.

What I have in mind is that we should adopt an approach to cogsci similar to what Oyama did for biology back in 1985 and onwards. 2/2

Yunus Şahin @herrbokologist.bsky.social · 29/04/2026
I'd say different conceptions of "coupling" and the emphasis on what constitutes "mind" as organism-environment interactions are the most important parts from a biological perspective. 1/2

And I believe that these parallelisms might lead to very interesting insights on the recent debates about "cognitive ontologies" if these two fields' conceptions of organism-environment "relationship" are bridged appropriately. 2/2

Thank you for clarification! In fact, I tend to think there are interesting parallelisms between how biologists think about it and how some schools in cogsci, say enactivism-ish ones, view it. 1/2

Congratulations, seems amazing! Quick question: why not "coupling" or "interaction" but "pairing"?

There has to be a way to do cognitive science without an assumed metaphysics of mind, after which cognitive scientific findings would inform philosophy of mind, rather than vice versa.
000
Yunus Şahin @herrbokologist.bsky.social · 21/04/2026
The problem with cognitive science, and some other so-called "special sciences" as well, is to start off with a particular ontology/metaphysics of "mind" where everyone can disagree. Instead, metaphysics of mind should be post-empirical, not pre-empirical.

Fodor's entire criticism boils down to the claim that "there is something called mind and it is representational other things are not so, so genes cannot 'code' anything, natural selection cannot 'select' anything etc." I agree on the last two points, but I disagree on the first two assumtions.

What I mean by folk-psychology is all mentalistic conceptions of cognition, so I mean something much more radical than most here.
000
Yunus Şahin @herrbokologist.bsky.social · 21/04/2026
Unfortunately, in the case of cognitive science Fodor and Pylyshyn tried hard and managed to convince the whole world that we don't need a scientific theory to do science. Folk-psychology is just enough. Though, the last 20 years of cognitive science has conclusively shown that they are wrong.

Sciences used to begin their lives with some sort of theory that would separate them from "everyday understanding of things", i.e. something different from folk-theory. That would be the starting point to separate them from armchair philosophy, among other factors. +

The result is a text that rethinks “therapy” from the ground up conceptually, epistemologically, and ethically. Whether it is “right” is dubitable. What I am certain of is that it is radically questioning and, I hope, intellectually provocative. 6/n

The paper also tries to address two guiding questions: 1) What would a form of therapy look like if it were grounded in radically embodied cognition? 2)What can the framework of radically externalist cognition, developed in my master’s thesis tell us about the nature and possibility of therapy? 5/n
