An illustration of why Golden Needle is my favorite hydrangea! The flowers start off as lace caps, with sterile florets around the outside, but slowly as the flowers continue to open more and more sterile flowers open, and it finishes off as a mophead! 🌷🌱
A photo of a young Golden Needle hydrangea flower, showing an unbloomed center, fertile florets in purple, new sterile florets opening in green, and older sterile florets around the outside edge in pink. A photo of a slightly older Golden Needle hydrangea flower, showing fewer fertile florets in purple, new sterile florets opening in green, and more older sterile florets in pink. A photo of an almost fully bloomed Golden Needle hydrangea flower, showing very few fertile florets in purple,a few new sterile florets opening in green, and is mostly covered in older sterile florets in pink.

And finally some hydrangeas from our Windcliff visit. No names on these sorry! 🌷🌱

Some happy flowers from Windcliff. A tiny pineapple lily, phantom agapanthus, salvia patens, and unknown, but loved much by the bugs! 🌱🌷
A photo of a tiny pineapple lily, pink blooms clustered an a flower spike topped with a cluster of small flopping leaves give the bloom the appearance of a pineapple A photo of agapanthus phantom. Loved this one enough to buy it! Tall flowers with white fading out to a steely pale purple/gray. A photo of salvia patens, these salvia flowers are blue. So very blue! I know @snellis.bsky.social already shared some of our adventures, but here is my take, starting with the renaissance garden at Heronswood! 🌱🌷
A photo of a beautiful fern covered with early morning dew. A photo of the perfect forest backdrop. Rotting log, ferns, creeping groundcovers, all perfectly executed in this planting. A photo of a stumpery on steroids! Huge tree trunks surrounded by ferns and perennial plantings. A photo of another great example of planting with big trees, ferns, and surrounding shrubs.

Too hot to do much the past few days. Garden kitty has enjoyed rolling in the hot gravel, the front patio filled with pots, the catio bed, and pineapple lilies! Zorro got too big so I had to move some to another spot, but never fear my pineapple lily love goes on ♥️🌷🌱
A photo of garden kitty being silly rolling around on his back in a gravel bed. A photo of the walk to the front of the house, the patio is broken up into sections, along the left side house wall full sun potted plants (although the rhododendron is blocking most of the plants!) along the wall straight back are potted camellias with some smaller friends. To the right are the larger potted plants and the summer dahlias. Please excuse any crispiness, it has been a busy spring and summer and not everything got the love it deserves! A photo of the catio bed. This bed is filled with peonies, hydrangeas, a large lilac and some miscellaneous smaller perennials. Bonus Gary included. A photo of two large hydrangeas, a limelight and zorro with potted pineapple lilies in front. There is actually a small hydrangea behind the pots as well!

Second flush roses! The Pilgrim, Summer Song, and Munstead Wood. I am in love with Summer Song. I know she is weak and a problematic rose, but that color is so unlike any other rose I have seen! 🌱🌷
A photo of rose the pilgrim, a soft yellow bloom with many petals fading to cream on the outer petals. Working on my new hydrangea alley! The lay out is mostly done, still have room for a few more, I will cut these back this weekend to hopefully allow time for new growth and blooms next summer. These are all a bit scraggly and leggy from being in pots for the last few years. 🌷🌱

As @snellis.bsky.social says, merry christmas! An amaryllis in bloom in July! I buy two or three of these every holiday season and after they bloom pot them up. So they bloom at odd times based on how old they are. This might be one of my favorites with the white edges on the petals.

Taking a break from hydrangeas (yes, I still have more to post!) here are some other flowers from the garden! First up miniature rose Green Ice, achillea Double Diamond, crocosmia Lucifer, and gillenia trifoliata, which I just saw at Dancing Oaks and wish I would have bought like three more! 🌱🌷
A photo of a cluster of blooms from rose Green Ice. This is a miniature rose which makes these small clusters of full double blooms starting out white and fading to green. A photo of achillea double diamond. I grew these little white puffs of bloom from seed many years ago and they are dotted throughout the garden. Unlike normal achillea which make large flat head of flowers these are more like very small clusters of carnation style blooms. They fully open allowing access to the stamens and bugs love them! They also add a bit of height to the border. A photo of a crocosmia lucifer bloom. Deep red trumpet style flowers make up two double rows of this flower head. We moved these last year and I am really looking for ard to seeing them against the goldenrod which is just starting to push flower buds! A photo of a gillenia trifoliata, with small white flowers of elongated petals of five. This plant is stunning, I want more of them! They are great in shade and are airy.

Hydrangeas and friends today! Hydrangea platyarguta, deinanthe caerulea, hydrangea Snow Queen, and a hydrangea x dichroa hybrid. 🌱🌷
A photo of a hydrangea platyarguta bloom. These small white blooms have four pointed petals and a center filled with bright yellow stamens. These small blooms are nodding on the plant, so it forces you to stop and take your time appreciating its beauty. A photo of a deinanthe caerulea, or false hydrangea bloom. These nodding blooms have the most tropical looking little purple flowers with white stamens. The large, split, fuzzy leaves are the real star of this planto but these fabulous little flowers are an incredible bonus. A photo of hydrangea Snow Queen, showing five large blooms. This is an oak leaf hydrangea which makes panicle style blooms of white. A photo of a hydrangea x dichroa hybrid bloom. This little guy is so cute! It makes these little clusters of very vivid pink and purple blooms. These seem to be showing up more and more and I am always glad to see them!

More hydrangeas waking up! Golden Crane, Maculata, Painter's Pallet, and a very small bloom of O Amacha Nishiki. 🌱🌷
A photo of a bloom from a Golden Crane hydrangea, chartreuse-gold and white lace-cap flowers with serrated petals. I bought this one from Sebright, but it is a Hinkley introduction. A photo of a hydrangea Maculata bloom just getting ready to open. This is another lace cap, petals open white and fade to pink or blue based on PH. But the real draw on this one is the heavily variegated leaves, every leaf has whites and grays mixed with various shades of green. A photo of a petite bloom of hydrangea Painter's Pallet. The petals, or florets on this one change colors with pinks, purples, greens, and whites never making the same bloom twice! A small half bloom of O Amacha Nishiki. The foliage just peeking in on the left, is heavily dusted gold with red stems. The lacecap flowers begin white and turn pink or blue depending on PH.

A photo of the back corner of the shade border. We removed a forsythia last fall and put in two hydrangeas and a camellia, to go along with the large hostas and hellebores. The dark red hydrangea should get between 6-8 feet, so should fill in well here. Golden Crane hydrangea should also be a bit big once it has grown in!

Hydrangeas today, and bonus wannabe garden kitty!
A photo of hydrangea queen of pearls in bloom. This is a mophead and the florets are a creamy white just brushed with green. This hydrangea makes the most beautiful deep green, glossy leaves. A photo of a green hydrangea that I have forgotten the name of! This beauty has frilled petals in tones of green. A photo of hydrangea zebra in bloom. This is a mophead hydrangea that makes fluffy white blooms due to serrated edges on the petals. This also has black stems so it is very dramatic! The wannabe garden kitty rolling around in the dirt. Why is he the wannabe you ask? Because he wants to be outside all the time, but he is not prepared to be outside on his own! While the garden kitty himself is very well behaved, this one wants to chase birds and squirrels, and has no ideas of the dangers (cars) outside. He is very much the ADD kitty and does not enjoy sitting still, and is very easily distracted. So, he is only allowed out in his harness or supervised!

Currently putting on a show are roses Jude the Obscure and The Lady of Shallot. Getting ready for the show are hydrangeas Limelight, Zorro, Golden Needle, Zebra, and more! 🌱🌷
A photo of the rose Jude the Obscure in full first flush. This rose is taller than I am this year, topping out at about six feet, and is filled with full double apricot colored blooms. A photo of the rose The Lady of Shallot in full first flush, filled with fully double apricotty/orange blooms. A photo of three hydrangeas Little Lime Limelight growing tall on the left hand side, zorro taking up the whole right half of the picture, and at the bottom left a special little hydrangea I got from Dan Hinkley a few years ago. This is it's second year in the ground and I have happy to see that it survived winter and is putting on new strong growth. While all green for now this corner will be full with the lime green and white blooms of Little Lime Limelight, bright blue blooms of Zorro, and soft pink double blooms of my new little treasure! A photo of the other hydrangea corner, this one also has a Little Lime Limelight on the right, a climbing false hydrangea just beginning to bloom its white lace cap blooms which give it its name, a very small baby Zebra hydrangea center front bottom, and on the left reaching for the sky is Golden Needle.

Progress is being made on the planting of the hell bed. Carpinteria Elizabeth is blooming! Our inherited bright pink double peony is putting on a show, and an unknown peony. Thought it was going to be sword dance but nope! May e someday I will figure it out. 🌷🌱🌷🌱
A photo of a garden bed being planted in gravel. This photo shows off some Japanese iris, Siberian iris, Spuria iris, tall bearded iris, peonies, day lilies, and some others! Having lived in Carpinteria I knew I needed this in my garden! A photo of a large peony bush covered in bright fuschia pink big double blooms. Flowers today! Peony Kopper Kettle, a fully opened peony Prairie Moon, weigela Wine and Roses, and viburnum harryanum. 🌱🌷
A photo of a peony Kopper Kettle bloom, this fluffy double opens a deep pink bronzy color and fades to a coppery apricotty yellow. Finally! A photo of a peony Prairie Moon bloom. A pale yellow fading to cream blousy bloom with yellow stamens tipped in orange. A photo of a weigela wine and roses bloom. This plant has dark purple leaves and bright hot pink trumpet style blooms in clusters. A photo of viburnum harryanum in bloom. An odd viburnum, this has tiny rounded leaves and makes these small clusters of very small white flowers. Each cluster is shaped like a small ball with flowers extending outward.

New blooms today! Peony Prairie Moon, not fully open but after waiting for two years I am thrilled to see that pale buttery yellow! An unknown peony, smaller and brighter than Red Charm. A native Oregon iris Douglasiana, and an unknown purple iris that was on the property when we moved in! 🌱 🌷
A photo of a peony Prairie Moon bloom. Pale buttery yellow petals surround golden stamens on this bloom. This one has been teasing me for over two years! Due to late frosts the buds would bullnose. This year it is in a pot waiting to be planted in the new bed, and finally a wonderful bloom! I will have to find a slightly protected place for it in the planting plan. A photo of an unknown peony bloom. This one is smaller, very bright red, without being pink, with simple elegant petals surrounding a tight cluster of gold stamens. It's a wee charmer of a plant! A photo of the Oregon native iris Douglasiana bloom. Narrow pale purple falls with bright yellow splashes, dark purple veining, and a hint of blue. A photo of an unknown purple iris bloom. This is an older iris with a less ruffled form than the newer varieties. It has deep mauve falls, with white and brown veining, pale lavender standards, and bright orange beards. I love these classic iris blooms and forms and hope to add more to my collection.

More peonies and bonus iris! May is here and the flowers are starting! Peony Singing in the Rain, peony Sonoma Floozy, iris Spice Trader, and peony Red Charm today! 🌱🌷
A photo of the peony Singing in the Rain. An open apricot colored peony with gold stamens in the afternoon sunlight. A photo of peony bloom Sonoma Floozy. This wonky flower has apricot blooms, with dark red centers and bright yellow stamens. You are never quite sure what you will get with the petals! This is partially open, with a bit of caterpillar damage to the outer petals. A photo of a iris Spice Trader bloom. Bright bronzes and copper colors mix with a splash of lavender on the falls, and orange beards fading to yellow. One of my favorites, there is no escaping these wonderful colors! A photo of a Red Charm peony bloom. Red as it's name, with a bomb style bloom. These are big flowers!

More peonies today! Picotee and Coral Charm. Also, my queen of tears is blooming! I overwinter her in the garage and still haven't gotten her out for the warmer weather yet. 🌷🌱
A photo of the peony Picotee. A pale pink/cream colored bloom with bright pink edging and bright gold stamens. This is a single peony style bloom, on a shorter plant that blooms early. This bloom is a bit beat up from finding itself as a snack for a very hungry caterpillar. I lose a fair amount of blooms to them each year and keep saying I am going to put organza bags on the bugs, but of course never do. A photo of peony Coral Charm just beginning to open. This is a bright pink not quite double bloom that has rich yellow stamens. This is one of my tallest peonies! A photo of a bloom from the plant Queen of Tears. This plant produces large arching stems covered in big showy pink bracts the last bracts on the stems open to reveal hanging clusters of green flowers with delicately recurving petals edged in deep bluish purple, contrasting bright yellow stamens along with matching pink calyxes.

Blooms in the garden! Peony Commando, iris Smitten Kitten, viburnum Davidii, and Double file viburnum in bloom. 🌱🌷
A photo of a peony Commando, a dark red, bomb. The dark burgundy flowers are very compact with the guard petals presenting the center pouf delectably. One of the very darkest red peonies.A photo of the iris Smitten Kitten a bloom with white standards and ruffled pink falls. I grow this one for my kitten Mitten who I sadly lost three years ago. A photo of viburnum Davidii in bloom. Small white clustered flowers set off against thick green, heavily veined leaves. A photo of a double file viburnum bloom. Rounded white lacecap flowers set in double file along either side of the branch gives this one its name.
