Hendrik Tiesinga @hendrikt.bsky.social · 08/04/2025Trade deficits matter: US imports > exports, funded by a financial surplus—mostly stocks & bonds, not new factories. In 2023, greenfield FDI was just 1.5% of it. It’s trading goods for paper assets, not building industry. 010
Hendrik Tiesinga @hendrikt.bsky.social · 08/04/2025It’s China’s and to a lesser extend Japan and Germany’s beggar thy neighbor trade policies that got us Trump and these tarrifs, not the other way around… 010

Hendrik Tiesinga @hendrikt.bsky.social · 05/04/2025Without tarrifs or a currency peg this is what happens. 1997 Asia crisis was the real turning point with the build up of offshore dollar reserves. The solution is likely monetary and not tarrifs. 020
Hendrik Tiesinga @hendrikt.bsky.social · 05/04/2025But only China and the EU have enough leverage and market size to engage in a trade war and even they probably don’t have the appetite. Trumps gamble might just work out. 110
Hendrik Tiesinga @hendrikt.bsky.social · 05/04/2025If Trumps gamble works 10% tariffs across the board will stay and deals will be made with individual surplus countries to cut their surpluses through various adjustments, and things will stabilize. Off course it can also turn into an all out downward spiral trade war… 110

Hendrik Tiesinga @hendrikt.bsky.social · 17/03/2025Trump has mastered the art of partial populism. He gives workers rhetoric and tariffs, while giving the rich tax cuts and deregulation. Until Democrats find a way to reclaim real economic populism, this formula will keep winning. #Trumponomics #EconomicPopulism 000
Hendrik Tiesinga @hendrikt.bsky.social · 17/03/2025The problem? Trumponomics isn’t sustainable. It balloons deficits, lacks industrial strategy, and does nothing for long-term economic resilience. But as long as Democrats fail to offer real economic populism, Trump (or a future right-wing populist) will own the narrative. 100
Hendrik Tiesinga @hendrikt.bsky.social · 17/03/2025So instead, Democrats play it safe: a moderate neoliberal economic agenda that excites no one, paired with progressive identity politics as their main radical stance. This strategy divides rather than unites voters around class interests. 100
Hendrik Tiesinga @hendrikt.bsky.social · 17/03/2025Democrats, on the other hand, are stuck. They can’t bribe business with tax cuts like Trump. But they also won’t embrace trade populism because their corporate donors—and the neoliberal establishment—oppose it. 100
Hendrik Tiesinga @hendrikt.bsky.social · 17/03/2025This balancing act works politically. Workers blame globalization for job losses and see Trump’s trade policies as a fix. Meanwhile, businesses and the wealthy benefit from deregulation and tax cuts, so they tolerate his economic nationalism. 100
Hendrik Tiesinga @hendrikt.bsky.social · 17/03/2025Instead of funding infrastructure, industry, or education, Trump fuels short-term growth with tax cuts and deregulation. This keeps Wall Street happy and ensures CEOs don’t turn against him—while his tariffs make it seem like he’s fighting for Main Street. 100
Hendrik Tiesinga @hendrikt.bsky.social · 17/03/2025Trump presents himself as a champion of the American worker. He pushes tariffs, trade wars, and economic nationalism. Many see this as a revival of FDR-style populism. But unlike the New Deal, his version leaves out public investment and progressive taxation. 100
Hendrik Tiesinga @hendrikt.bsky.social · 17/03/2025Trump’s brilliant move is that he combines economic populism with tax cuts for the rich. This mix—pro-worker rhetoric and pro-business policies—keeps both the working class and corporate elite on his side. It’s politically powerful, but economically flawed. 🧵👇 110
Hendrik Tiesinga @hendrikt.bsky.social · 14/03/2025Sounds reasonable but it does assume maintaining a gas infrastructure which is a cost, and an upgraded grid is needed anyway if we electrify transport and other things. Maybe it works in NL because it already has gas everywhere but I would bet on full electrification. 100
