In my ~18 months of Sherlock obsession I could never figure out who the 'colleague' was. I imagined some kind of real life politician, perhaps even Thatcher, but googling only led me to a Canadian bloke from many decades ago, which seemed wrong. And it was! It's something M said about James Bond!
