I feel like they really haven't had the vote surge people assume they've had from the increase in online hype

Maybe it's the fact that I'm far from London, but I feel like this by election hasn't been a massive deal? I really feel like the Greens should have been able to make it into a massive deal, but Labour, by choosing a sensible local candidate, robbed them of that opportunity.

Also, being polite shouldn't be a conscious decision. You should naturally say "please" and "thank you" and you should instinctively hold doors open for people. These things should be second nature and you should do them without thinking.

I'd forgotten until the other day where the phrase "jam tomorrow" comes from, and every time I read about it (especially having forgotten) I audibly chuckle - it's such a wonderful Latin pun

Saw a video of the H&SP Labour candidate avoiding questions on Gaza and I just find that so baffling. At least before you could (badly) explain it as "just the party line" – but now the party's got a fairly strong position that the UK needs to do more, so I don't know why she can't say that

While I have my doubts as to how sincere this is, I genuinely hope that it receives enough praise that she finds the strength to sack shadow ministers who say such things.

Just watched a video of someone explaining their unsuccessful pitch for the Doctor Who CBeebies show and it's so strange - I really think people overestimate the age of that audience.

Why not, if the interpretation and writing is all my own? Why does it matter that I was introduced to a book by AI as opposed to by a person who might also have recommended that book?
100
Luke @helloitsluke.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
You're replying as though I'm asking AI to write for me, or even plan for me. I'm not, I'm just using it to identify previous work on the subject which otherwise I wouldn't have known about, which I then go and study myself, as normal. I'm not AI-generating any work, just the initial research.

Luke @helloitsluke.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Sorry, I think we're talking at cross purposes. I'm not AI generating anything more than a reading list. All reading, thinking, and writing is me.
100
Luke @helloitsluke.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
I would like others to read it. I think I've overstated the extent to which I use AI. What I meant is it can be a useful tool to identify existing sources in an area I'm not familiar with, so I can go and read them. I wouldn't ask it what it thinks, because it would be unreliable and/or unoriginal.

...yes?? I know. I'm reading books to draw my own judgments. I don't know what's problematic about that.

I really think we're too generous in our estimation of Trump as a bad president. He is, but that's not the point. A bad president is only bad for the length of their term. He's a misogynist, a liar, and a rapist, and his poison will stay with America for years to come.

Everything seems to be going right in my life. I have a job I don't hate, with great people, where I'm doing well. I have a decent amount of savings and don't feel like I'm scraping by. So why don't I feel happy about any of this?

Luke @helloitsluke.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
E.g. I'm working on a piece at the moment and gave ChatGPT the general outline of my thesis, and my plan for the essay, and just asked for a reading list, and it gave a very extensive reading list. It's now up to me to go through that reading, make my own notes, and use/not use it as appropriate.

Luke @helloitsluke.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
What I meant is asking for sources, not asking for interpretations. Obviously it can hallucinate sources, but I find that's less of an issue than it was, and that's for me to find out when I go and read them. I'm not outsourcing any of the thinking or understanding.

I'm genuinely shocked that she's literally used the phrase "under new management" - is it just me who closely associates that with Starmer's leadership?
000
Luke @helloitsluke.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I agree, though I do think AI can be useful for essay research. I approach it not as "AI can get this done faster" but "AI can broaden the palate of existing ideas from which I can form my own thesis". (I'm coming at this from a purely recreational, non-academic & non-professional POV, crucially.)

Can't wait for the discourse around TARDIS Crew. I think it's going to be a great show for young kids, but the Dalek voices are going to offend Who 'fans' on an epic scale. (I think they'll be most like the 1996 ones.)

It's a weird one. Some - like 12 Things - are great. Others have potential but just aren't developed far enough. Then there are some really excellent songs which are just bizarrely left off the album (Anyone But Me) or relegated to B-side (Eyewitness)

It saddens me that The Future Bites got so much backlash, because I personally loved it and really wish he'd kept that going alongside the prog stuff. I enjoyed The Overview, but it felt very safe 'SW by numbers', so I guess I shouldn't complain when this one takes more risks.

I simply think that if you have to put out a statement assuring your members that a motion passed at your party conference will not be used to discriminate against them, you need to have a long think about whether this is a party you want to stay in.
