Who’s gonna model that in CG? Who’s gonna take a pass at a fingerprint look treatment? If you say A//I, I will spit on you. The very thing that makes stop motion so beautiful are the traces of actual humanity in it. Finger prints. Shifting hair and fur. Stuttering poses. How imperfect it is.

I’m a firm believer in stories being able to inform the type of animation you do, much like how if you’re gonna make an animated show, you make it ANIMATED. And what this guy is pitching is great, it’ll be beautiful in stop motion. REAL stop motion. He said he loves seeing finger prints in clay.

I have Etsy! I’d say it’s middle passive once you’re all set up. I don’t have the time to advertise on social media consistently so I like that it’s a marketplace. The fees can be pretty high for sure, but I like that Etsy collects and remits sales tax on my behalf, which is worth the fees (imo).

This is how I learned my dad made his own toys. He would study the toys of the kids in the neighborhood (grandpa didn’t buy toys) and replicate them. He liked making spinning tips out of those thread bobbin thingies.

Dad said his dad would open up their front door so the neighbors could watch when they walked by. Also did that when he would borrow his boss’ film projector, and would play Chaplin films too. If a neighbor kid came in halfway, grandpa would restart the film, even if it made them break curfew.

Seeing an animator’s fingerprint embedded in clay, if it’s clay. The use of poly-fil for smoke effects, the tiny little stitches in their tiny little clothes. Tiny replicas of food. Literal, physical smears. Biblically accurate puppets when they have duplicate limbs for an action. It’s delicious.
