The 'w' modifier (or more general, modifiers for expression selectors) I think is a great idea to add. This feels more of solving a real issue. However it’s not solving the performance issue that people wanted to solve with -*

Anselm Hannemann @helloanselm.eurosky.social · 25/08/2026
Yeah, that’d be great. I think my main concern is that the current draft to me reads too rushed and too far from reality to be a web standard feature. Hence my try to publish a blog post with concerns to boost discussion. Unfortunately, not much feedback came, so special thanks to you here!

Anselm Hannemann @helloanselm.eurosky.social · 25/08/2026
By the way, the whole goal of the spec is performance gains. There’s a lot of history in CSSWG of creating features for performance which turned out to be solvable for UA vendors while a spec feature is hard to drop later on. Your ID example has the same poor performance so doesn’t solve the problem
000
Anselm Hannemann @helloanselm.eurosky.social · 25/08/2026
It may look more clean at the moment but it’s less flexible and more confusing in details as the current draft spec is. For the suggested feature, the whitespace does not matter btw. What I don’t get is why it’s fine for you for IDs but not for classes?
000
Anselm Hannemann @helloanselm.eurosky.social · 25/08/2026
It’s still in discussion as far as I understand. It’s leaning towards what you write here but not decided. And… it’s still not BEM compatible which would mean __ is also possible to use. The main point though on BEM was that a v2 with prefixes was suggested which is not a realistic thing.

Thanks for the feedback. On this one: I know it’s not meant RegEx, that’s what I actually am concerned about. There’s talk that this is a new syntax but a standard should be for the masses. And masses will see this as RegEx and wonder why it does not behave like it.

Heartbreaking. And a wake-up call. It is no longer about being difficult to find a way to sustain yourself through your work online. It is no longer sustainable to keep a website up now. Axel has done so much for the web and all of us. Buy one of his books if you can. We've learned so much from him.
2ality blog: temporarily offline

Dear visitor! Two things happened recently:

- The income from my book sales went from being enough for me to live off (2024) to zero (2026).
- The traffic to my blog and my books (which were free to read online) increased beyond what I can currently afford. Virtually all of it comes from AI crawlers, so there is no ad income.

Therefore, I’m taking my blog and my books offline so that I can decide what to do next – especially w.r.t. AI companies stealing my work. This may take a while (think months): I don’t have any energy to deal with this right now.

I apologize for this (hopefully temporary) inconvenience to my human readers! You can still buy my books at Payhip.

Unfortunately regenerative agriculture has the same issue as the tech industry. Low margins, hard exhaustive work, low returns. It’s great to do this as farmer but a bit like playing around with technologies while the overall boundaries get tougher.

2/ I’m not sure how to change that. We need to provide a better vision for the future than what’s currently pushed by most tech companies. They have a lot of power and (e.g.) many politicians listen to them. That’s why different narratives are important.
