An edit of the “trolley problem” meme. A black line drawing shows a trolley car approaching a fork on the track while a frowning person stands with their hand on a lever that could change the trolley’s direction. In this version, the straight-ahead path sends the trolley toward an image of the earth captioned “one habitable biosphere.” On the fork is the mustachioed white man in a top hat from Monopoly doing a dance captioned “2700 billionaires.”

Two tweets by Peter Kropf from August 28, 2021. They read:

qotd - How the fuck can there be anti vaccine “witches?”

If you disagree with binding an invisible malignant entity into a single drop of potion that seals a subject’s blood against the full force of that very same entity’s curse then you are not and can never be a witch you’re just a karen who buys rocks

A poster by Sexual Violence Centre Cork with text arranged in boxes in a grid, with black text over various shades of light purple. It reads:

How to avoid sexual assault! A quick and easy guide*

*for perpetrators.

1. Don’t put drugs in people’s drinks.
2. Use the buddy system! If you can’t stop yourself from sexually assaulting someone, ask a trusted friend to accompany you at all times to stop you.
3. When you come across someone who is drunk or asleep, the best thing to do is not rape them.
4. When you see a woman walking by herself, leave her alone.
5. If you are in a lift and someone steps in, remember not to sexually assault them.
6. Carry a whistle. If you think you might rape someone, blow the whistle until someone comes to stop you.

I'm more into wind instruments.
Detail from Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights, the "hell" panel. In a crowd of naked, suffering souls, one figure bows under the weight of an enormous shawm he carries on his back. A normal-sized recorder is stuck into his butt.

But this one truly blew my mind:
The cover art for the album Homage to Johannes Ciconia ca. 1370-1412 features an oil portrait of a thin young white man in a brown late-14th-century short tunic with split sleeves that have long portions that hang down to pool on the ground. It is trimmed in white fur. His legs are covered in bright red stockings, and he holds an arrow in is right hand and a golden circlet in his left. The painting shows cracks, scratches and other signs of age. The ensemble's name and logo are on the right edge overlaid on a golden-colored vertical rectangle.

This is the first one that came to me.
The cover art for Steeleye Span's album Time is mostly abstract rough or scratchy layers of oranges, browns, yellows, and white. Partly obscured by those markings is a photo of a neoclassical statue of a standing figure reaching toward a seated or reclining figure that has its head resting on one folded arm as if in sleep.

An illustration of a cat-like creature in orange and white on a black background. It has oddly long ears and entirely too many teeth, which are quite large. It has its hackles up and claws extended. Several disembodied eyes float around it. Its body seems to be marked with or made of celestial stars. Below it, a caption in green reads: "Wouldst thou still love me if I were a primordial wretch in the abyss?" Smaller text reads: "Choose your fate" with the options "Embrace the wretch?" or "Perish." The "perish" is selected. Credit reads "Art by cellsdividing.com".

Example of what these border figures looked like:
In a bottom border of the Bayeux Tapestry, two embroidered images of birds lift a wing each to “point” at each other and have their breaks open as of telling. Oddly, they areas to have antennae on their heads. They are depicted in “laid and couched” embroidery in shades of beige and cream plus some liverwort added in darker color. This technique does not lend itself to high-fidelity photorealistic images, and what kind of birds these are is not immediately apparent.

Part of their other foot and camelpack is visible on the edges of the image.Photo of a bicycle standing upright in front of a blue Jeep on cracked concrete. In front of the bike stands a black backpack, and next to it lies a yellow camelpack.User _white is a Black man with a fluffy salt-and-pepper beard wearing a shirt with the message, "Do not give me a cigarette under any circumstances no matter what I say." The photographer sat in the driver's seat of a Jeep and took a photo looking down at their legs. Their light pink trousers are smudged with a streak of dirt. The backs of the seats in the back of the Jeep are folded down. There's a black backpack and a yellow piece of gear I think is a camelpack for carrying water.A bicycle is propped up sideways against the rear bumper with the front wheel and handlebars resting just inside the vehicle through the trunk door. The bike is fully stowed inside the Jeep, along with what looks like a small portable chair and a colorful towel or bag.

A person is modeling a crocheted (I think) balaclava that looks like Cthulu. It is made of bright green yarn and has a thick brow ridge over the eyes and a big mess of curly, free-hanging tentacles concealing the lower half of the face. All that is visible of the person is their eyes and glasses, a hint of light-colored skin around their eyes, and a zippered jacket in a fabric print of cute owls.

Social media post by Muslim Sisters of Éire, split across two images. First image reads:

We've spent the last 48 hours coordinating the logistics and prep work necessary to get our soup run stationed at the GPO. When we got to the top of O'Connell Street, the Guards wouldn't allow us to go through, but after much persuasion, they escorted us with a patrol car up to the GPO. Given the current situation, we truly appreciate them assisting us despite having their hands full.

We arrived and were surprised that the queue was not as large as expected. When we got there, a lot of people thought that we wouldn't be able to get through. Soon the word got out and the queue became much longer.

Everything went well; we had a lot of food and donations. A huge shout out to little Amelia who came to our office and donated €50 from her birthday money as well as her Easter eggs — such kindness and beauty in such a young child. A credit to her mammy and daddy.

Tonight took a deeply upsetting turn. As we were finishing our service, we were approached by a group of five or six individuals carrying Irish flags. They began shouting xenophobic rhetoric, telling us this country is "only for the Irish," that we don't belong here, and that we should "go home."

In a beautiful show of solidarity, those around the GPO immediately spoke up, asserting that we are Irish. However, the situation turned hostile. Our Chairperson and founder was targeted with verbal abuse and told to "go back where she came from" — despite being from Coolock. It was clear that because she wears a hijab, her identity as an Irish woman was being questioned. The post from the previous image concludes:

In 11 years of service, we have never experienced such verbal abuse. It was difficult to maintain the peace, but the homeless community—truly amazing people—stepped up to protect us. We are grateful that the situation eventually de-escalated and the Gardaí arrived to disperse the group.

Providing 300 meals to those in need only to be met with hate is sickening. But let it be known: we remain undeterred. We are united, and we will always be there for the less fortunate, regardless of their background. In Ireland, you don't need an ID to receive a warm meal from a soup run.

We can't do this without your constant support. If you would like to help us or donate, please visit https://msoe.ie/donate/.

A series of quote-posts. First, Donald Trump on Truth Social posted a long rant, part of which is visible. It is too long to include in full but begins, "I know why Tucker Carlson, Megyn Kelly, Candace Owens, and Alex Jones have all been fighting me for years, especially by the fact that they think it is wonderful for Iran, the Number One State Sponsor of Terror, to have a Nuclear Weapon — Because they have one thing in common, Low IQs. They're stupid people, they know it, their families know it, and everyone else knows it, tool Look at their past, look at their record. They don't have what it takes, and they never did! They've all been thrown off Television, lost their Shows, and aren't even invited on TV because nobody cares about them, they're NUT JOBS, TROUBLEMAKERS, and will say anything necessary for some 'free' and cheap publicity." He continues to rant about each of his targets in turn.

Ed Krassenstein posted a screenshot of that on Twitter and commented, "WOW! President Trump just completely turned on Tucker Carlson, Candace Owens, Alex Jones and Megyn Kelly."

Then Tim Pool quote-posted Ed's tweet with an all-caps comment reading, "That does it. I am done. This was the last straw. I'm so angry."

Drawing of a thin woman in fantasy cartoon style. She has pale grey skin, pointy and elongated ears, several piercings on her ears and eyebrow, light hair that's long but shaved on the sides, and black lipstick. She wears a very sexy outfit: a skin-tight, black bolero shrug whose sleeves are full-length gloves with thin black straps that form an inverted pentagram on her upper chest, a red choker, a red strap over her breasts that only partly covers her nipples, a black "skirt" that is only a narrow panel hanging over her crotch, and a red garter belt decorated with cross shapes that is not attached to her thigh-high fishnets. She stands with one hand resting over the top of one breast and her hip cocked to the side.

A charming illustration in a soft textured cartoon/manga style with a pastel color palette. A cute blue critter (possibly a cat?) with blue ears wearing square-framed glasses pops out of an upper drawer in a big bank of filing cabinets. It looks excited and holds aloft a manila folder. Below stands blond feminine-coded figure in a sleeveless white top with a golden halo over her head. She has her hands on her hips and is smiling and winking at the blue critter.

Same space as previous image, but now we have gone down the staircase and are facing the door. At this angle, we can see that there are fluorescent bulbs in the drop ceiling by the doorway. The bulbs cast a cool glow over the door. A view of the door, looking straight on. It is like looking into a complete void. Looking down at the door from partway up the stairs. The door seems to be casting a shadow on the floor immediately in front of it. Possibly this is because the overhead fluorescent lights cast a shadow from a well-concealed frame, or perhaps the darkness is seeping out?

A CGI-rendered image of an interior, showing light brown walls. A row of five ceiling light fixtures hang from angular, shallow arch structures over a hallway. They cast less light on the space than you’d expect. A grey arch displays a red neon sign that ominously reads “Turn around”.Same space as the previous image, but a lower camera angle reveals that the grey arch is part of a bulkhead over a descending staircase that leads to a black rectangle. A door, or a portal to utter darkness?Same space as previous images. A close-up view of the descending staircase with a dark doorway at the bottom.

Physical Disability and Labor Market Discrimination: Evidence from a Video Résumé Field Experiment
By CHARLES BELLEMARE, MARION GOUSSÉ, GUY LACROIX, AND STEEVE MARCHAND*
We sent fictitious applications to firms advertising job openings. We find that revealing a disability decreases callback rates by 25 percentage points. This result is not explained by accessibility constraints or lower productivity due to disability. We find that including a video résumé of a well-spoken applicant significantly increases callbacks by 10 percentage points for persons with and without disabilities, suggesting that discrimination is unaffected by quality signals in our context. Analysis of viewing activity suggests that employers seek less information when the applicant is disabled. Disclosing the disability later in the video increases employers' viewing time but leaves callback rates unchanged. (JEL C93, J14, J23, J24, J71, K31, M51)

Line graph. Caption reads, “FIGURE 6. CUMULATIVE PROBABILITIES OF TOTAL VIEWING SHARES”

Y-axis is cumulative probability. C-axis is total viewing share (percent). The notes explain the three lines in the graph as follows:

N’otes: All computations are made only on observations that included a video résumé that was viewed at least once.
The total viewing share is summed for all views. For example, an employer who views the video entirely the first ime and views half of it the second time has a total viewing share of 150 percent. "No disab." includes videos tha did not disclose a disability. "Disab. and early revelation" includes videos that disclosed a disability early. "Disab and late revelation" includes videos that disclosed a disability later. Videos seen more than six full times excluded for the scale of the graph.’

All three lines generally trend upward, with sharp upward jumps at 100% and 200% viewing share and detectable but less dramatic jumps at 300%, 400%, and 500%, at which point they plateau. Overall, the highest line is “disability and early revelation,” the second is “disability and late revelation,” and the lowest is “no disability.”

A figure from the paper captioned, “FIGURE 5. CALLBACK RATES FOR BOTH EXPERIMENTS, BROKEN DOWN BY DISABILITY STATUS”

It is a bar chart showing the callback rate in various scenarios. There are six bars in two groups of three bars each, one group marked “No disability” and the other marked “Disability.” The notes explain the bars as

‘Notes: "Benchmark" indicates applications sent during the benchmark experiment. "Vid. exp.: no video" indicates applications sent during the video experiment that did not include a video résumé. "Vid. exp.: video CV" indicates applications sent during the video experiment that included a video résumé. "No disability" and "Disability" indicate applications that did not disclose a disability and that disclosed one, respectively. Ninety-five percent confidence intervals for proportions shown.’

The data for the no disability group shows callback rate for the benchmark was about 0.3, for the experiment without video CV was about 0.45, and with the video CV was about 0.55. The same data points for the disability group were about 0.15, 0.2, and 0.28 respectively.

Two figures from the paper. The first shows a still from a video of a thin white woman’s head and shoulders. She has brown hair that is pulled back with bangs framing her eyes and is wearing black business clothes. There is a caption and a note under the image:

“Figure 2. Video résumé, narrow frame
Notes: This figure shows the initial camera frame for all video résumés sent (with and without a disability). The framing does not show the chair the actress is sitting on.”

The next figure shows two images of the woman in a wider frame that shows what she stated on. In one, she is on a chair. This image is captioned:

“Panel A. Without disability”

In the other, she is in a wheelchair. Its caption is:

“Panel B. With disability”

Below the two panels is a note:

“Note: Panels A and B show the first camera frames that reveal the chair the actress is sitting on for video résumés without and with a disability, respectively.”

Deadly Force
I. Law enforcement officers and correctional officers of the Department of Justice may use deadly force only when necessary, that is, when the officer has a reasonable belief that the subject of such force poses an imminent danger of death or serious physical injury to the officer or to another person.
A. Deadly force may not be used solely to prevent the escape of a fleeing suspect.
B. Firearms may not be discharged solely to disable moving vehicles. Specifically, firearms may not be discharged at a moving vehicle unless: (1) a person in the vehicle is threatening the officer or another person with deadly force by means other than the vehicle; or (2) the vehicle is operated in a manner that threatens to cause death or serious physical injury to the officer or others, and no other objectively reasonable means of defense appear to exist, which includes moving out of the path of the vehicle. Firearms may not be discharged from a moving vehicle except in exigent circumstances. In these situations, an officer must have an articulable reason for this use of deadly force.

Dairyman of Justice Policy on Use of Force
Adopted May 20, 2022
It is the policy of the Department of Justice to value and preserve human life. Officers may use only the force that is objectively reasonable to effectively gain control of an incident, while protecting the safety of the officer and others, in keeping with the standards set forth in Graham v. Connor, 490 U.S. 386 (1989). Officers may use force only when no reasonably effective, safe, and feasible alternative appears to exist and may use only the level of force that a reasonable officer on the scene would use under the same or similar circumstances.
As the Supreme Court stated in Graham: The decision to use force "requires careful attention to the facts and circumstances of each particular case, including the severity of the crime at issue, whether the suspect poses an immediate threat to the safety of the officer or others, and whether [the suspect] is actively resisting arrest or attempting to evade arrest by flight." Id. at
396. "The calculus of reasonableness must embody allowance for the fact that police officers are often forced to make split-second judgments—in circumstances that are tense, uncertain, and rapidly evolving—about the amount of force that is necessary in a particular situation." Id. at 396-97. In addition, "[t]he 'reasonableness' of a particular use of force must be judged from the perspective of a reasonable officer on the scene, rather than with the 20/20 vision of hindsight." Id. at 397. "[T]he question is whether the officers' actions are 'objectively reasonable' in light of the facts and circumstances confronting them." Id.
This Department-wide policy emphasizes core principles and training standards for the DOJ law enforcement component agencies, which have updated their individual use of force training programs regularly.

An illustration of two thin, light-skinned figures holding mugs of a brown liquid that might be hot cocoa. On the left is one with short grey hair wearing a very snug Santa-themed outfit in red with white trim and a matching Santa hat. Animal ears poked up out of the hat. This figure is smiling and has an arm over the shoulders of the other figure. On the right is a person with long brown tousled hair, a sad or tired expression, and wearing a black sweatshirt with red writing that is mostly obscured with their arm but seems to say “Fuck.” The two people are looking at each other. Imposed over the drawing are the words “Happy Holidays!”

Many Middle Eastern people in white doctors’ coats stand on risers. About 40 of them are women in headscarves, standing on the left half of the risers. About 70 men stand on the right half. On a low stage in front of them, seven men in identical black outfits with yellow sashes are dancing. All of this is facing an audience, a few rows of which is visible in the foreground. Behind the risers looms the crumbling walls of a bombed out hospital. About three stories are visible. A few window frames are partially intact, but nota single lane of glass remains. Most rooms have no front wall at all. Rubble covers the floors, and pieces of cable or bent rebar dangle chaotically.

A head-and-shoulders selfie of a white man with short salt and pepper hair and glasses with frames that are rounded rectangles, and a dark grey-blue zip up fleece. He is sitting in front of a window that shows part of a striped awning and green leafy trees. Diffuse sunlight spills in over his right shoulder, backlighting that side of his face so his facial hair kind of glows. He has a calm, relaxed expression.

Photograph. It is dawn in a residential neighborhood, so early that no one is up and about yet and the street lights are still on. Cars are parked, waiting for the morning commute. The branches of winter trees are silhouetted black against a beautiful sky just illuminated blue, where the horizon glows a warm pink that is reflected in a thin cloud cover.

"Hi there, My name is (your name) and l am calling to oppose multiple harmful internet bills that are moving through Congress right now. I oppose all bills that mandate online ID checks, infringe upon our constitutional right to free speech on the internet, enable government policing of online resources, and threaten end-to-end encryption. If you truly care about young people's experience on the internet, you should pass comprehensive data privacy legislation and oppose any bill that forces Internet users to submit to ID checks or would censor the internet, like the SCREEN Act, App Store Accountability Act, and KOSA."Table title: MEMBERS OF THE SUBCOMMITTEE ON COMMERCE, MANUFACTURING, AND TRADE

Twitter user John Gregorchuk said, “Architects are cooked. AI is coming for you. Prepare accordingly.” But the attached AI-generated blueprint shows how incompetent AI is at designing homes. A “mudroom and laundry” contains counters, two sinks, and two bath tubs. There are three bedrooms, but one contains only counters on all walls. No fewer than six rooms are bathrooms, but two have no sink and two others have no toilet. One has three sinks. An outdoor porch is labeled “master room.” The bulk of the floor plan is a big open space that has some kitchen elements on a few walls distant from each other. A wall that is not connected to anything on one end has a door in it. It is absurd.

An image produced by @skircle.bsky.social seems to represent a BlueSky account’s closest connections as a series of nested rings of profile pictures. The central picture is the largest, a red-haired girl drawn in manga style. The three rings contain about 50 pictures, most of them also manga portraits, but also a couple of photos and some non-portrait icons. Text over the image reads skircle.me.

And this Court's eagerness to playact a district court here has serious consequence. The majority calls its "evaluation" of this case "preliminary." Ante, at 1. The results, though, will be anything but. This Court's stay guarantees that Texas's new map, with all its enhanced partisan advantage, will govern next year's elections for the House of Representatives. And this Court's stay ensures that many Texas citizens, for no good reason, will be placed in electoral districts because of their race. And that result, as this Court has pronounced year in and year out, is a violation of the Constitution.
