A friend recently got a stent put in related to a kidney stone removal. My brother came up with this incredibly clever and useful mnemonic for remembering the difference between urethra and ureter that I have been laughing about all afternoon.

But “AI”, even more so than any other tech, is contingent on political clout. It’s what forces through data centres, lets companies infringe on copyright and violate software licences, renders them at least temporarily immune to all kinds of consumer protections and wrongful death suits, and results in the political collaboration where “AI” systems provide authoritarian states with “accountability sinks” and algorithmic cover for institutional racism. It’s this political partnership more than anything inherent in the technology that has let the “AI” bubble get this far and change so much.

It’s also what makes analysis so fraught because the US is over as a global power. Getting beat by a cash-starved, under-resourced, extremist state struggling to quell internal unrest is not something that happens to global superpowers. Remember, this isn’t an instance of asymmetric warfare like the Vietnam War where the very strengths of an empire are turned into weaknesses. Iran has big obvious military targets and an organised military that’s still functioning after an all-out attack by the US. It’s state versus state where even a draw means the big state lost. It’s what happens to shit-heel nations who don’t know their time has come, like when the United Kingdom and France rushed headlong into the Suez Crisis.

But the Hormuz crisis also delivered a second mortal blow to the US-controlled globalised market. You can’t remove 20% of the world’s energy output, not to mention a number of other essential commodities, without disastrous consequences. Two weeks would have been bad enough. Two months are a catastrophe. A whole summer would be unimaginable.

I could write the ten page paper the night before it was due, end up with 13 pages, aggressively edit it down to 11, apologize to the professor as I turned it in for exceeding the max length saying every word left after editing was absolutely necessary, and end up getting extra credit on the work.

My boss hates it too and theorized that a lot of lazy men love it because it just encourages them in their mediocrity and never corrects them when they are wrong. Back in the day the potential of the internet was being smothered by the dominance of Microsoft's browser, Internet Explorer. So those of us of techie orientation would encourage friends and family to install Firefox or Chrome instead, or would even just do it for them surreptitiously because most people don't really care what their web browser is as long as it works. Nowadays you don't hear about Internet Explorer at all anymore, and we're all better off for it.

It's time to do that again, but for Google. Google has announced that the search product they made their name on will no longer provide a list of links to other websites at all, but an "AI-driven experience" replacing references from across the web with a kind of digest of training data sprinkled with confident falsehoods and no way to tell where the information was sourced from. They've announced, essentially, that they are at war with the very web they built their success on and that they trained their "AI" models on. It is hard to overstate the damage this would do to the production and distribution of human knowledge. I think this is far more important than choice of browser ever was.

For about a year I have been a happy customer of Kagi, a paid alternative that has some "AI" features but you can turn them off. The search results are high quality and the product respects your choices when you decide you don't want something appearing in your results. But I am a niche user who makes dozens of searches per day and so the price is well worth it. Most people will want to stick to free products. For that I can recommend DuckDuckGo (again, turn off their "AI" feature, they will respect your choice, or use noai.duckduckgo.com). I've also heard mojeek.com as an alternative, but I haven't used it myself.

At the very least, on your phones, tablets, and computers, change your default search engine to anything but Google. DuckDuckGo is often available as a choice in the settings without having to do anything extra.

Many like myself started un-Googling their lives years ago when the earliest signs were appearing that this company would become a detriment to the world. But it's not enough. People for whom technology is not a primary pursuit are Google's real bread and butter, and they won't feel it without such people walking away. I am happy to help.
