I set aside my friend's letter for later in the day, when I've got some uninterrupted minutes and I can sit in my comfiest of chairs to read it. And I have talented friends who draw in their letters. <3

That time is spent building up experiences you can talk about in your next letter. It gives you something to look forward to, and then you get the gift of a letter back (hopefully) long after you'd probably stopped thinking about it much. What a fun surprise. Then I hold on to it to read it!

Writing by hand takes time if you want to be clear and understood. It forces you to think before you write down the words, which is remarkably calming. And then there's the time it takes to send and receive a reply, if your friend decides to write back. This is a good thing!

This is so different than social media, where it's a one-to-many thing -- you're just shouting into a crowded room and no one in particular, which means you're never having an actual conversation...until someone gets an unpleasant personal read from your shouting, and then there's conflict.

That ended once we had email in college, and I haven't written physical letters since then, until now. I adore making the space and time to sit down and write, at a slow pace, to a specific friend. I've got them pictured in my head the whole time, as if they were sitting across from me.

I was a HUGE letter-writer as a kid. My best friend and I wrote 30-page tomes to each other in diary-like fashion. Our parents would buy us a roll of stamps for Christmas every year. We had a rigid system of writing while we waited for the others' letter, than adding our answers in, then sending.

My husband’s grandfather was a well-known painter of the Northwest School of abstract expressionism in the 60s. It was a treat to walk into the Seattle Art Fair today and literally see on the first wall one of his paintings!
