The way labor strikes work is they have to have consensus from the group, then they vote for the final. They don't always arrive with the full plan. It needs to be hammered out. CASE STUDY: CHILE
Students
and
workers
both played key roles in toppling the brutal regime of Augusto Pinochet.
In July of 1985, high school students began to occupy their schools, and after mass protests, stopped Pinochet from privatizing education - one of the first victories that showed he could be defeated.
Inspired by the protests,
unions
began to
call for escalating society-wide strike days.
They learned to avoid military repression in their strikes, forcing a vote that led to Pinochet's defeat.

CASE STUDY: SERBIA
Large protests in 1996 and '97 seemed no match against Serbian dictator Slobodon Milosevic, but in 2000, he was ousted. How?
YOUNG PEOPLE
formed a movement,
Otpor, to turn the Serbian people against Milosevic. They transformed political
consciousness with nonviolent protests.
WORKERS,
beginning with coal miners and
media workers,
went on strike after
Milosevic refused to step down. They shut down Serbian society until he conceded.

HOW TO END AN OLIGARCHY:
WHY STUDENTS?
Over and over, STUDENTS and
YOUNG PEOPLE are the ones who erode public support for authoritarians.
Trump is currently sitting on a 48% approval rating.
There's no pathway to mass resistance when this many people support him, but an organized movement of students and young people can quickly crumble his support through disciplined non-violent protest.

They are complying in advance. They are turning more right wing. We need a new party… if we go back to this system after the total destruction of the country. Social democracy sounds good right about now. Popular vote. Multiple parties and a real representative government. Social safety net.

More than a few stuck out to Playbook:
• The party should "embrace patriotism, community, and traditional American imagery";
• Democrats should "ban far-left candidate questionnaires and refuse to participate in forums that create ideological purity tests" and "move away from the dominance of small-dollar donors whose preferences may not align with the broader electorate";
• They should "push back against far-left staffers and groups that exert a disproportionate influence on policy and messaging" ;
• Candidates should "get out of elite circles and into real communities (e.g., tailgates, gun shows, local restaurants, churches)"; and
• The party needs to "own the failures of Democratic governance in large cities and commit to improving local government."
