One of the most-viewed PNAS articles in the last week is “Value misalignment in X’s feed algorithm is a reflection of value tensions in engagement.” Explore the article here: ow.ly/V1Mg50ZFWnP For more trending articles, visit ow.ly/XjLl50ZFWnO.

I want to talk about why AI-based mass surveillance is so dangerous, and why I would oppose it no matter which party or president is in office.

Boston-area folks: I'm hosting a "build your own social app" hackathon next saturday @ MIT. No coding experience required! Learn about our vision for a "malleable social web" and help shape the new ecosystem :) Register here: social.wiki/Social.Wiki/...
A poster for a hackthon with examples of various social apps. The text says:
"Build Your Own Social App
Hackathon

No Coding Experience Required!
Food and prizes!

Saturday, March 14, 2026
1:00 PM - 4:00 PM (partial attendance OK)
MIT Stata Center, Kiva Room (32-G449)"

There is a QR code that says "Limited capacity please register!!" and a link to https://social.wiki

The apps around include a pink discord-like app called "PinkCord", an app called Pixel Flip for collaborative pixel art, a messaging app where the messages are targets, a game of Othello, a microblog called stanza, an apple notes-like app, a figure drawing app with a poorly drawn bunny, and an instant messenger where all messages are handdrawn.

Empirical evidence that people can build highly predictive mental models of even complex AIs, if and only if the algorithm fulfills three criteria:

Is the only way we can create algorithms that people understand to make them trivially simple? We argue, no. People can predict the behavior of algorithms that are arbitrarily complex, if and only if they are available, compact and aligned. arxiv.org/abs/2601.18966
A search for factors for algorithm understanding results in multiple terms displayed as documents, including available, compact, and aligned. These are shown to be necessary and sufficient. Other, similar terms are shown in the background faded, like intuitive, rule-based, grounded, modular, linear, decomposable, accurate, symbolic, causal, and personalized.

As of June 2025, 66% of Americans have never used ChatGPT. Our new position paper, Attention to Non-Adopters, explores why this matters: AI research is being shaped around adopters—leaving non-adopters’ needs, and key LLM research opportunities, behind. arxiv.org/abs/2510.15951
A circular flow diagram that compares current and proposed practices for LLM development using data from adopters and non-adopters. Three gray boxes represent current practices: “R&D,” “Chat Models,” and “Adopters’ Needs and Usage Data,” connected in a clockwise loop with black arrows. A blue box labeled “Non-adopters’ Needs and Usage Data” adds a proposed feedback path, shown with blue arrows, linking non-adopter data back to R&D and adopters’ data.
