Here is the cover of the July-August issue of Monthly Review. I'm not seeing dates for when the various articles go on open access. Mine is "Capitalism and Cognition: The Fate of Science in a System in Decline". I'll post the link when it becomes available.

In a thread on Red Note, contributors were invited to describe the US in 3 words. There were many responses, most of them from the US. Here is a sample capturing the overwhelming majority of them: a dumpster fire, a failed experiment, an empire in decline, broken beyond repair.

It is interesting to me how international women's day has become so mainstream. It originated in the socialist movement. My first memory of celebrating it stems from 1976, a big event that filled the Mansion House in Dublin, initiated by the CPI, with speakers from Chile & USSR.

What we are witnessing in not just a rogue administration but a vast and powerful system in decline. The news everyday in "the west" brings news of how the elites are dragging us ever deeper into the morass.

With Trump is all so blatant, so naked, but it is the exercise of oligarchic imperial power that has been building for a long time. On #Gaza, who are the people meant to luxuriate in this riviera? This is not only ethnic cleansing, but class war.

Right-wing in what sense in a Chinese context?

000

Helena Sheehan @helenasheehan.bsky.social · 03/02/2025

Scrolling on RedNote, I am struck by how young people from US and China are talking about their lives and societies. Much individual detail, but what is most striking is a strong sense of one society plunging downward while another is surging forward.

Yesterday at Connolly Books I spoke of how economic-political-social-cultural-intellectual-psychological decadence is being generated by the capitalist mode of production in its protracted degenerative phase, trying to balance key concrete indicators with theoretical argument.

According to Biden "Today an oligarchy is taking shape in America". About time to have the concept of oligarchy in play in the US, but oligarchy took shape a long time ago. Biden and his party are only an alternative and more hypocritical version of it. #Oligarchy #Biden

Happy new year insofar as possible with such dark forces on the horizon. Liberals are fretting about what Trump might do, but it is so much bigger than that. It is a civilisational crisis. It is an empire in decline wreaking havoc on the world as it goes down. Resist and build.

Today I had a visit from a former investment banker turned truth seeker, who read my last two books and wanted to discuss the need for system change. Things that triggered him: reading Thomas Piketty, hearing a talk by Richard Wolff and learning of the last words of George Floyd "I can't breathe".

I was recently in #China teaching at Peking University. I found students there serious, open and more confident about having a future than students elsewhere.
