I really like @hankgreen.bsky.social's recent take that what AI can be is either utility or slop, and that, for better or worse, software has always been primarily utility for the end user. Here's to hoping we don't let our tech, design and products become slop either 🤞 youtu.be/dT5IJExTUR4

I've started replacing scrolling with solitaire card games during breaks, and this is the closest I've come to beating Klondike so far 🥳/🫠
The results from a game of the card solitaire Klondike. It's four aces in a row, except that the Ace of Spades (🎶 the ace of spades 🎶) has the Nine of Spades on top of it - meaning it's as close to a successful game of Klondike you can come to without actually winning it.

Society is so cool, humans are so cool, the fact that there's so many tasks and jobs and roles and places in society where people can work and make an impact and difference in the world is awesome. I wanna remember that more often 🌍

I was talking with one of the people who runs the coworking space, and she asked what I work with and I said I work "in tech", and she asked what I meant because that could be ANYTHING - civil engineering, biotech, energy technologies, etc. There's so much world outside of the IT software bubble!!!

www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8U7... I've recently moved up north in my country to a smaller city, and the coworking space I go to has people who work outside of tech, and it's honestly *so nice* to just hear about things that aren't tech and software!

A very mean-looking beetle joined me for dinner yesterday - its rage was palpable
A dark gray beetle, about 20-25mm long, sitting on the armrest of a wooden chair. It has the meanest-looking eyes you can imagine - black as tar. It's staring into your soul, and judges the very core of your being. It's giving "I will haunt your dreams, shit on everything you hold dear, and if I had the required body mass, I would beat you until an inch of your life".A dark gray beetle, about 20-25mm long, sitting on a glass table. It has the meanest-looking eyes you can imagine - black as tar. It's staring into your soul, and judges the very core of your being. It's giving "you have disgraced the air around you, your existence is offensive to me, and I hereby curse you and everything you hold dear for ten generations".

And @hankgreen.bsky.social followed up with *the single best metaphor* about the internet: it's like food. So obviously, managing the role that the internet has in life is just as (or more) complex than maintaining a balanced relationship with food, and it all makes sense. youtu.be/9euKCrTyMEc?...

What is in your tech stack?
Hi 👋 this is Gergely and Elin at The Pragmatic Engineer. We want to know what tools, languages, frameworks and platforms you're using today! We want to get a realistic snapshot of what the industry is...

writing and creating and building things and expressing myself, but it hard to do that when the platforms for expressing yourself are just *massive* hurdles to overcome. It makes me sad to think that so much creativity in one place can harm so much creativity elsewhere... :'(
110
Elin @hejelin.com · 07/03/2025
the creativity of the users of those platforms, but also themselves, because obviously there are loads of us who are on both sides in this! I love enabling creativity in folks working in the tech industry, because software engineering can be such a creative and expressive craft, but I also like..
100
Elin @hejelin.com · 07/03/2025
to unlock and enable creativity and sharing creative work with others. But then, as Cam says, the platforms, and *especially* recommendation algorithms, are seemingly harming creativity more than anything. So the creativity the tech industry uses to develop and monetise the platforms are hurting..
100
Elin @hejelin.com · 07/03/2025
Being a creative in the tech industry is such a curious place to be - because on the one hand, I know these platforms exist because of the creative process that is software engineering, and developed by creative PMs, devs, designers, people, and at one point, these platforms were supposed to exist..

Also, "10x engineers" tend to need quite a lot of "normal engineers" around them anyways - if they're force multipliers they need something to multiply, and if they're lone-wolf machines, you need folks to do all the stuff they don't do. A 10x team is not made of 10x engineers (rather the opposite)

Also I've lived in this apartment for SEVEN YEARS and have tried and failed to use the top shelf for taller items THAT WHOLE TIME
000
Elin @hejelin.com · 21/01/2025
for context, I'm tall and I can't see into my fridge at that angle unless I bend down at least a foot 😭

Elin @hejelin.com · 21/01/2025
I was today years old when I realised the top shelf in my fridge can actually store tall things because there's MORE SPACE AT THE BACK 🤯
A hand attempting to put a tall bottle onto the top shelf of a fridge, but the cork is hitting the roof of the fridge so it doesn't fit The same bottle and fridge but from a slightly lower angle, where you can see that further back on the top shelf, there's more space because the roof of it tilts upwards. It kind of looks as though, if the bottle is tilted into the fridge, it actually DOES fit on the top shelf???The bottle, standing on the top shelf, with room to spare. 🤯

From today's fancy duck walk 🦆🎩
A waddling of mandarin ducks, sitting atop a partially snow covered bank next to some open water - four males and three females. There are mallards swimming around them. Three of the males are gazing to the right so you can see their colourful head plumage, and one is looking towards the camera.A low sun behind a body of partially frozen water, a boat on the right edge, and ducks/mallards swimming, standing on the ice, and one caught mid-flap next to the sun reflecting in the water.
