We are finally seeing ASA leadership recognize the ASA meeting boycott and its impacts, to the point where they're extending the deadline to June 15, and committing to an early council meeting to "work towards a resolution." Keep up the pressure! As we've been saying, boycotts work!
We look forward to seeing many members in New York in August for the 2026 ASA Annual Meeting. It is shaping up to be an engaging meeting, and we're excited about the program that has come together.

We extend a sincere thank you to the many volunteers who have contributed their time and energy to making this program possible by organizing panels, reviewing submissions, and supporting the meeting in so many ways. These efforts are meaningful and truly appreciated.

We understand that some members are choosing to boycott the meeting, while others plan to participate in person as originally intended. If your paper was accepted, you will have a scheduled room and time to present as listed in the online program. This includes sessions where organizers, presiders, or other panelists have chosen not to participate, even if fewer papers are ultimately presented. Please note that to have a presentation count as part of the 2026 Annual Meeting, participants must be registered and follow ASA registration policies, including those for remote presentations.

The registration deadline for participants listed on the online Annual Meeting program has been extended to Monday, June 15 to provide additional time to consider the information shared in this email. If you intend to present at the Annual Meeting as scheduled, please register by June 15 (before 11:59 p.m. EST).

Finally, we know this has been a challenging period for our association, and we sincerely appreciate your patience and continued engagement. Your feedback and concerns are being heard and taken seriously. We, along with Council, have been listening closely and are engaged in ongoing, thoughtful conversations about how best to move forward. Council will meet in June, ahead of its regularly scheduled August meeting, to support this ongoing effort to work toward a resolution.

Please reach out to us directly if you have questions.

Best,
Heather M. Washington

WHAT DO WE DO ABOUT IT?
A Conversation with Sociologists for Palestine

In this interactive session, attendees will have the opportunity to engage S4P organizers directly on issues including boycott logistics, tactics and strategy, and support of junior scholars.

Though the panelists will provide brief preliminary remarks on why they joined S4P and support the boycott, the emphasis will be on a collective give and take. In doing so, we hope to create a space that prefigures the kind of democratic association we want the ASA to be.

Yes. As I discuss with students, mass migration is not settler colonialism. Settler colonialism is a specific type of state-building project. In the 1960s Fayez Sayegh pointed to features of state-building. A "settler community” had to be built and developed into a “settler-state.”

To do so: 1. Don't resign! 2. Skip registration. 3. Work with your section to hold a remote or offsite session. 4. If you have to go, then: A. Don't stay in the ASA hotel block. B. Participate in protest inside the conference.

Caitlin Schroering writes "it is unacceptable to deny ASA members ... a vote on the question of a boycott of Israeli academic institutions. I support this petition because ... Israel is engaged in apartheid, occupation, and genocide against the Palestinian people, including scholasticide."
Statement: ASA members received a deeply troubling and shameful email on March 12th entitled "ASA Policy, Member-led Petitions, and ASA's Future." In the simplest of terms, it is unacceptable to deny ASA members--who used the proper procedure--a vote on the question of a boycott of Israeli academic institutions. I support this petition because, as the petition language outlines, Israel is engaged in apartheid, occupation, and genocide against the Palestinian people, including scholasticide. The boycott resolution would hold accountable Israeli universities who are playing a key role in this occupation, apartheid, and genocide/scholasticide. The email from ASA leadership, and the language used in it ("conflict" instead of genocide as one example), is on the wrong side of history. But this is also about democratic governance, Let us have a vote. As a junior scholar who has paid dues for 11 years, is currently organizing a session for New York, serving on an award committee, running for an elected position, and submitting an invited session for 2027, I will be reconsidering the resources (both dues, registration fees, and labor) | give to ASA. If this decision holds, and a democratic election is not allowed, I will be withdrawing my resources from ASA.

In another letter to ASA membership, a student writes "I'm left struggling to see what the purpose of this organization is, or my place within it. I will not be renewing my membership or attending the conference."
Dear Dr. Washington & Dr. Correll,
I am shocked at the disdain that ASA leadership appears to have for the democratic process, casting a free and fair voting process as illegitimate because the outcome was contrary to its preference.
ASA's actions in casting that election as illegitimate, in refusing to consider the demands of the new petition within the ASA Council, and last year in censoring an obituary by Ruth Milkman for Michael Burawoy that mentioned his support for Palestinian rights
-- these do not suggest political neutrality or respect for diversity of opinion. At best, they indicate a fierce commitment to the status quo. Ironic, considering the 2026 meeting theme is "Disrupting the Status Quo: Putting sociology to work for a more equitable society." Who is supposed to put "sociology to work" if not the country's largest association of sociologists?
I'm left struggling to see what the purpose of this organization is, or my place within it. I will not be renewing my membership or attending the conference.
Regards,

If you’re working on LGBTQ+ movements or rights and thinking about ASA submissions tonight, I’m organizing two connected panels on queer/trans movements and LGBTQ+ rights in times of crisis and backlash. Submissions are due tonight at 9PM (EST). Thanks for considering!
• Sociology of LGBTQ+ Rights in Times of Crisis
This panel invites sociological scholarship examining how LGBTQ+ rights are shaped by, and respond to, contemporary crises. From rising authoritarianism and humanitarian crises due to wars and genocides to climate emergencies, crises fundamentally reshape the terrain on which LGBTQ+ rights are envisioned, enacted, and contested. This panel seeks papers (or extended abstracts) that analyze the complex relationship between crisis and LGBTQ+ experiences, communities, and mobilizations. What discourses, strategies, and technologies of "human rights" do LGBTQ+ as well as anti-LGBTQ+ movements deploy under conditions of crisis? How do LGBTQ+ communities, at the intersection of other minoritized communities, become targets of political scapegoating during periods of multiple crises? How do crises exacerbate existing vulnerabilities while potentially opening spaces for mobilization, coalition, and more? The panel is open to highlighting diverse political and cultural contexts as well as theoretical and methodological approaches.Global Queer/Trans Movements
This panel examines contemporary queer and trans movements across diverse global contexts, analyzing how activists mobilize for rights, recognition, and belonging amid an intensifying global wave of anti-LGBTQ backlash. As LGBTQ rights become increasingly contested in political and cultural discourse worldwide (particularly with the rise of illiberal and authoritarian regimes), this panel explores the discourses, strategies, and coalitions that queer and trans movements deploy to resist state homophobia and transphobia, repressive legislation, and anti-LGBTQ mobilization. How do queer and trans movements organize and build coalitions in times of backlash and scapegoating? How do intersections of gender, class, race, and empire become central or marginalized in movement formations? What roles do transnational networks (including global funding flows, transnational advocacy networks, and anti-rights mobilization) play in these processes? How do movement strategies and meanings vary across geographic contexts, and how are they connected to one another? This panel welcomes papers and extended abstracts that advance critical understanding of how queer and trans movements navigate increasingly hostile political climates across different parts of the world.

“Lovely Hula Lands” by Haunani Kay-Trask

Recently, the Association for Asian American Studies (AAAS) announced that it will be convening its 2026 annual conference in Honolulu, Hawai‘i.

The call for proposals describes Hawai‘i as a “space, place, and time through which to collectively reflect on, respond to, and reckon with settler colonial and U.S. imperial desires and designs that continue to shape everyday life and futures.” So far, neither the participants nor the conveners appear to see a contradiction between the theme of the conference and its very material and environmental impact, in which hundreds of primarily North American scholars and their families will flock to a place that is actively under U.S. colonial military occupation.
