As someone who played offline at launch and subsequently got Reaper of Souls and played it offline? FUCK YES. It was a genuinely solid core game from 1.0 and ignoring Blizzard doing shitty customer-adverse things (Real $ Market was clearly not a dev idea) - It was a well made and balanced game!

Steam is a functional monopoly, which can be healthy. The big difference is that a functional monopoly is someone controls a majority of market share through a superior product, competitors exist and are able to compete, it’s just difficult. GOG provides DRM-free product, Epic offers free games, etc

The issue with that is, Sony has made other legal cases before on the basis of their physical game production. Removing physical releases kills their Anti-Monopoly argument, trying to use other storefronts doesn’t work because their competitors are maintaining physical releases, and PC is so diff

Like, Borderlands and Diablo are arguably the worst about this in terms of “Games where the DLC is great, but does nothing to change the story/progression, just adds on” but even then, sometimes you just wanna boot up a run of Demon Hunter or Mechromancer and run the game again.

I think some games are okay to get DLC, such as long-form RPGs that you can play differently each time. Diablo, Rogue Trader, the Pathfinder games, Mass Effect and Dragon Age, etc. are all games where DLC is fine because a revisit isn’t going to be the same experience every time.
