(1/4) in a dream, ephrim sits on a throne as a shadow moves towards him.
ephrim: Dreams are my one respite from my duties? what is it?

ephrim [with accusing eyes]: Whose fault is THAT?

Ephrim pulls apart his cloak to reveal a ghostly arm. The shadowy figure is revealed to be Maelgwyn, who looks guilty.

ephrim: I don't want a lecture from the one who caused THIS.

(2/4) maelgwyn tries to explain but keeps getting interrupted.

maelgwyn: you know I-

Maelgwyn shouts in a flame of color and then fizzles out at his own temper.

maelgwyn contemplates himself and sits down with a hand on his face as ephrim looks coldly down at him.

maelgwyn: that wasn't... it wasn't....... hah. I'm sorry. We both inherited titles from my f- Samothes. Confidence Alive. Ingenuity Alive. How we've been marked, you and I.

ephrim sits down—not quite next to maelgwyn, but getting on the same level.

ephrim: If you think that this will absolve you, you're a fool.
maelgwyn: no. but....

maelgwyn turns to smile, a little bitterly, at ephrim.

maelgwyn: I will not let you make me dwell on old titles.... Lord.

the dream ends. ephrim is left sleeping gently in the warm rays of the morning.

Devastating for scientists and their research, and everyone who benefits from that research. I’m not sure if everyone outside academia is aware that a delay or “pause” in grant funding often means the researchers themselves are lost from the field, along with their expertise.
