I am a Mainer and yes, we can hold ourselves to basic standards of decency. If Platner does make it to D.C., he will be spread on toast and eaten for snack - much like Jared Golden, another democrat with military service, who was presented to us as a broad appeal panacea a couple elections ago.

Downeast Mainer here. I went to school with Platner’s fishing partner’s wife. I am a Bernie democrat, and I will be voting for Janet Mills. No difference between Graham’s Nazi tattoo and Hegseth’s Nazi tattoo. No guy too stupid to know it when he got it is smart enough to legislate for us.

Yup, the Southern states were forced to count enslaved black people as 3/5 of a person, instead of 0% a person (repugnant as that is), at all because plenty of whites, northerners, and free black people were all howling to count them as wholly human.

Always struck me as weird I subjectively perceive ‘recent’ vs ‘ancient’ based on length of a country’s overall history. Worked on a project for the NPS with a document from the 1880s in America, “Oh that was forever ago.” Read a book from 1880s England, “Oh, that’s basically the modern era.”
