ICYMI, my tribute to Assata Shakur for @heckle.scot
"Following the assassination of Charlie Kirk and Luigi Mangione’s alleged killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson last year, there has been much performative hand-wringing over the spectre of political violence; fear of being perceived as sympathetic to such violence or its motivations in any way has led many in the public sphere to debase themselves through grovelling mea culpas and sweaty tributes to the suddenly curtailed life of a white supremacist carnival barker. It has not, to put it mildly, been edifying.""Shakur lived free of this kind of cowardice, empowered by the understanding that the most prevalent and pervasive political violence in any society undergirded by capitalism, imperialism, racism and patriarchy is carried out by the state – a reality affirmed by the thuggish stormtroopers of ICE, the presence of troops on American streets, or the mere sight of a police uniform and all that it implies. Any and all who take issue with the revolutionary violence embraced by Shakur and her comrades must grapple with that."

"Scotland’s most vocal prohibitionists are wont to refer to harm reduction as a vast and nefarious industry, concerned only with its own enrichment and self-preservation – they should try looking in a mirror. Those fighting to deny Scotland the safe consumption rooms and drug law reform it desperately needs do so because their own approach to addiction is wedded to the War on Drugs that has consistently failed for a century, doing untold harm in the process, to the poorest peoples and nations most of all. Despite this, that war has always been politically advantageous for those who would get on board with it, so it is no surprise that some would rather not see it sink."

Obviously, this article was filed before it happened, so my thanks to Keir Starmer for proving my point with his latest characteristically stupid intervention.
News report from The Daily Telegraph: 'Sir Keir Starmer has declared that Labour faces a battle against Reform for the soul of Britain.
The Prime Minister said “the battle of our times is between patriotic national renewal” of his Government versus the “toxic divide” offered by Nigel Farage.
He said that voters at the next election will not be faced with “the traditional Labour versus Conservative” choice because the Tory party is “dead”.
Sir Keir added Labour must reclaim patriotism from Reform by demonstrating to working people that “only we can deliver the pride and belonging they seek”.'

"Genocide is not an unhappy accident; it is the policy of Israel, and Starmer’s weak-sauce threat to arrive at a party 37 years too late will not dissuade Netanyahu nor the Israeli far-right upon which his government depends – nothing will, so long as the United States remains Israel’s steadfast benefactor.""Starmer almost certainly knows this, which is why recognising a Palestinian state in the wake of the Israeli parliament’s vote to annex the West Bank and Netanyahu’s push to militarily occupy the entirety of Gaza – a plan one Israeli official has referred to as “full conquest” – is, in terms of bleak absurdity, only a few degrees shy of Spain recognising a Catalan republic on the dark side of the moon. It is roughly equivalent to offering those dying daily from a manufactured famine a photograph of thin gruel."
