I agree it's annoying and can be time-consuming (unless you spot the hallucinated/fake references straight away, as you did!). I'm not quite sure of a better or more practical way than including it in the new normal for peer reviewers though to check for fakes, tho.

I mean, I sort of have started doing it as a peer reviewer since picking up the habit from marking students' essays... but also the publisher focuses on typesetting, which is after acceptance. Annoying to take it on, but I'd probs prefer a specialist like a peer reviewer was checking for fakes.

It is striking that teaching at the speed of wordy PowerPoints becomes too much information for learning and discourages students taking notes by hand. In high school my teachers used to write on chalkboards. We'd write as they wrote in front of us, same speed. But PowerPoints race ahead faster.

This Super Bowl Sunday, I’d like to introduce you all to the magical curse bowls used in Upper Mesopotamia and Syria in late antiquity. Written in Mandaic (as here) or Syriac Aramaic, they trap demons who trespass on a household by sucking them in with spiraling spells to the center of the bowl.
A Mandaic curse bowl in the Royal Ontario Museum. It has a spiraling Mandaic text that leads to an encircled x at the center.
